I am trying to print onto a 6" x 6" birthday card (so full size is 6" x 12").  I have followed the link given to set custom size, but the printer does not show that in the selection of paper installed.  Each time I print, it gives an error, ' Paper size mismatch: The paper size detected by the printer sensor does not match the selected paper size'.  I have tried different paper sizes in the selection on loading but none seem to work.  I have managed with different size card stock.

It is not entirely clear that Custom Size is supported though there are indications that Custom Size may be available as an option in your Windows environment.

Following are some things to check / verify / adjust:

Paper Condition

It is possible that regardless of all else you do, adding content to a pre-folded pre-printed card may fail.  Most consumer grade printers do not like "pre-printed" cards.

For example:  The surface (texture) of the card may be unacceptable, the color of the paper may cause problems, the edges may be featured, raised, or in some way "objectionable", the "fold" may trigger a sensor or get caught in the rollers causing the print job to jam or fail.

Specifications

Printer Specifications for HP OfficeJet 3830, DeskJet 3830, 5730 All-in-One Printers

  • Paper Handling
  • Supported Cards
  • Supported Custom Sizes

Paper Tray Capacities (Paper type Cards, Weight, Capacity)

Cards
Up to 200 g/m2 (110 lb index maximum)
Up to 20 cards

The specs indicate that custom paper size is only supported in Mac OS - while this may indeed be the case, the Full Feature Software for Windows is new enough that it may now support this useful feature.

Load Paper

User Guide

Read Chapter 2 - Section Load media.  Mind the warnings about not using photo or other "thick" paper in the ADF

Chapter 3 - Section Print from your computer

NOTE:  This next part is unclear to me - I don't have this printer.

There are hints in the Guide that (at least for Mac OS and at least with a USB connected printer) that you can tell the printer the paper size (and type?) by changing the paper and then modifying the settings on the printer control panel.   Does this apply to Windows?  Maybe.

After you change the paper in the printer, change / modify the paper size on the Printer Control Panel (the control panel on the printer).

Firmware

There has not been a Firmware update for this printer (at this writing) for a while.  Nonetheless, if you have not done so, please consider updating the Firmware.  Although the description does not include the magic words "adds custom size to Windows", there may be something in the update that is necessary / useful.

Custom Paper Size Form

For those reading:  The document to which the customer refers is:  Creating Custom Paper Sizes

  1. Availability depends on printer model and software and Operating System / Version.
  2. If the feature is at least partially supported the Custom Setup will be available in Devices and Printers OR in Printer Preferences.
  3. If the feature is fully supported, the custom form can be created AND then used with the printer software.

Where located

  • Devices and Printers > Print Server Properties

OR

  • Printer Preferences > Print Dialog > Paper / Quality > Custom setting box

Example 1

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Left-Click on your Printer one time to highlight >

Left-Click Print Server Properties (along the top ribbon)

Example 2

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Right-Click on your Printer > If necessary, select printer from drop down menu / list

Printing Preferences > tab Paper/Quality > Custom

Depending on Printer Model / Software, changing the paper in the tray may require that the paper settings be adjusted on the printer control panel.

  • Open Tray > Remove existing paper, load new Paper > Check printer control panel: “Modify” > select Paper Size or “Custom” > OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down list, Select Custom

Media Type (Kind of Paper)

Media type Index card is supported to the weight specified.

It is likely, too, that Brochure Matte is supported (though this Media is not specifically mentioned in the Specifications.

Depending on the software you are using to create / print your cards (paper size 6x12 inches), the paper size will be selected in the print submission software or the printer properties / print dialog.

The Media is usually selected first, then the Paper Size.

If the order does not work as suggested, switch around and try selecting the Paper Size and then the Media type.

If any combination  is "known to be incorrect", you will see a tiny yellow triangle of doom next to the unsupported  selection.  There is no "workaround" for the tiny yellow warning except to select a different combination of Media, Size, and Source (Tray).

The cad is not pre-printed, I am trying to print on a blank one.  It works well with other sizes of card, just not the 12” x 6” ones.  I have set the size on the computer but the printer is asking for a size when I put the card into the feeder.
