Our printer shows an error message of '80.0086 embedded jetdirect error' with a solution of turning off and on. This we've done but the error message remains.

What else should we do?

You can try cold reset printer if that doesn't help you can disable embedded jetdirect and see what happens.

Sorry for being so basic, but how do I do a cold reset - is that the same as switching it off and on again?

And if that fails, how do I disable jetdirect?

Further thoughts/observations:

1 - With the error message that is showing, it isn't possible to access any of the menu items. Presumably there is a way of switching the printer on while holding down other buttons?

2 - If the jetdirect feature is turned off, will that stop the printer being used in a network, as it is at the moment?

To Cold reset follow instructions:

To disable embedded jetdirect instructions are the same you will need to navigate to option Disable embedded jetdirect instead of Cold reset.

If this helps your network on the printer will be disabled and you will need to buy and instal HP jetdirect network card ( HP Jetdirect 625N or similar) it's cheaper than printers electronics, and only has 2 screws.
