I have been experiencing a service error 79 on a handful of my network connected HP printers as of late, and I am coming up blank as to the *why*.

Here are the symptoms and remedies I have tried to resolve this issue.

On a specific subnet 10.x.10.x - it goes into its Service error 79 boot loop.

Printer objects have been removed from the hosted print server.
Removed the reservation from DHCP and removed the lease address.
Manually set the IP address of the printer to an address outside of the assignable addresses from DHCP (but within the subnet) 10.x.14.x

Tried separate switch ports, and even separate switches (that host that subnet)

Firmware has been updated to the latest version.

When moving the printer to a totally separate subnet - it works as expected.  Pulls a DHCP address for that subnet, and print jobs process as expected.

I am at a total loss as to the *why* this is happening.
Yes, the symptoms all point to something wonky with that subnet, but I am coming up with no concrete answers or places to look to further troubleshoot this issue.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

FINALLY - I found the solution in another thread and this appears to have fixed it!

The issue is caused by the "WS Discovery" service which causes the printer to be overwhelmed with incoming network traffic responses and produces 79 error or won't print via the network.  The solution is to turn off the "WS Discovery" which can only be done through the HP WebJet software.

Cheers!

It is look like there are pending jobs or files are in specific ip adress when you connect to the network then these files or jobs transfer to printer.

This would make sense *if* someone had set up direct IP printing to this printer.

However,  performing a factory reset on this printer - (no change)

Removed DHCP reservation and deleted the currently assigned IP address (no change)

Manually reassigned a different IP address (on the same subnet)  - no change.

Removed/Deleted the printer object from the print server (no change)

It still loops in its 79 Service error.

Ironically, when I pulled another m401dn to do a swap - it too started with the same error.  And it had been offline for months.   Im almost convinced that there is something between this printer and the subnet that its hosted on.  This makes zero sense.
