I'm looking for a printer as well. I would rather get a cheaper printer and pay for higher quality ink. Any suggestions for printer under $200. And refillers info would be excellent.

So I am interested in this technique as well. I have found a HP laserjet 1100 printer available used for a reasonable price. i checked the MSDS for the HP toner cartridge paired with this printer and it listed the Iron Oxide level as "less then 50%". How much less? Is this printer suitable? Thanks.

Hi,

There are many options for inexpensive printer that will deliver good amount of toner to work for your application. Just remember the larger high volume printers are better at delivering high volume of toner to the paper for darker printing in general. The way the HP cartridges are built, all HP blend has 40 to 50 percent iron oxide in them, except the newer printer which has changed to charged plastics. The oldest is the HP4 and HP5 series that is very inexpensive. Many are sold for $50 on eBay. Check the print count to get a printer with less use. I prefer HP4000 series which is high volume and the cartridges are inexpensive to buy. HP4000 printers can easily be found for less then $200.  When you purchase a toner cartridge, be sure to purchase high quality, dark printing toner. Many cartridges that says "Remanufactured" do not change old component to save cost and will not print as dark. Be sure to ask for new Mag roller and New drum when purchasing a rebuild toner cartridge. Some rebuilders can even increase the iron oxide in the toner by adding more. Just because you purchase a MICR toner does not guarantee more iron oxide. But standard 40 t0 50 percent which is in HP toner bend should be adequate.

Hi,

HP 1100 can work.  But it is a small printer with small cartridge which delivers low volume of toner to the paper compared to the larger printer.  For heat transfer printing, you want a large volume of toner delivered because as can understand if only 40 percent on the toner is iron oxide 60 percent of plastic is burnded off and you want as much volume of toner delivered as possible. You can find larger used HP printers just as cheap as HP1100.  I would use larger models like HP4000, 4100, etc.  As I stated before, get a high quality cartridge and test the density of the print by printing solid black page and compare.  I specailize in custom building but I do not want to make people feel that I am promoting my business and will only provide information.  But you can find business online by searching Heat transfer print cartridges.  Hope I answered all your questions.

What is your opinion on the HP 4500 printer? I just found one online for $20 that may have some issues. My experence with printer issues is that they are often the resut of bad drivers or a spotty computer, so i may take a gamble on this one, $20 isn't much money.

Hi,

HP4500 is a color printer.  The black cartrige does not have much iron oxide in it, if any.  It has to do with how the toner is delivered in color cartridges.  Monochrome printers use cartridges using magnetic rollers to deliver the toner.  Because it is magnetic, the toner powder has to have high iron oxide to deliver toner to the paper.  But color cartridges use a rubber roller and charge blade to deliver toner, so toner does not need to have iron oxide in it..  The amount of toner delivered is much less with rubber roller and will not work for heat transfer because there is little to no iron oxide in the toner.

Ok I found a hp 4000 and a hp 4050 for under $50 each, any difference between the two that makes it better for this process?

This page lists the material safety data sheets for Laserjet Toner cartridges.

http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/globalcitizenship/environment/productdata/ljmsdsuseng.html

Just match the toner number in the left column, up against the corresponding  Laserjet models, which are listed in the right column. Click the toner number to look at the MSDS for it. The material data safety sheet has a section which lists approximate percentages of chemical content.

Available Laserjet models are listed here:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Printers/Printers

Just click on Laserjets in the left section for available models. You can narrow it from there based on options.

Hope that helps.
