HP 5740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

About 1-2 weeks ago, I can no longer print wirelessly from a Windows computer.  I have been through all the troubleshooting and printer will not come online.- https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Officejet-5740-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/6617253/model/661...

I have zero problems with my apple devices and believe this occurred after a windows update. I have re-installed device drivers, software, plugged, unplugged, rebooted and only way I can connect is via a cable.

This has been working with no issues for about 4 months. Anybody else recently having issues.

64 bit Windows 10 Enterprise version 1607 OS build 14393.1715

Greetings @jcr14

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are able to print from your iOS devices, but not from your Windows 10 computer, is that right?

Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own.

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

Are you able to make a copy on the printer?

Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)

Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)

Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.

Click on print server properties.

You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.

Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.

Restart the PC.

Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,

Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.

It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files, ignore them).

If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.

Restart the PC again.

Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.

Power On/Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

Once the printer is reconfigured, follow the procedure mentioned below to assign a manual IP Address to the printer. Click here for a video.

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer (which can found by pressing the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel)
  • Enter the IP address on the web browser (Ex: chrome, IE) to enter the printer EWS page.
  • Go to the “Network” tab, click on “Wireless (802.11) then click on “Network address (IPV4)
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.

Let me know if this helped.

Thank you. After following every step, it finally worked. However, I did have to manually add the printer within the control panel at the end and then it worked. Honestly, I would be interested to know what is the underlying cause of this because I must have spent 6 hours trying to get this to work. Just hoping this is not going to be a regular occurrence with Windows 10.  :Surprise:

Hello, @jcr14

I see that you were interacting with @Chimney_83. He is out of office and I'd like to help 🙂

Glad to know that the issue is resolved after following the steps!

It could be a compatibility issue with the print drivers when the Windows was updated. I am sure this won't be happening again after any of the updates!

Thank you again and may you have a wonderful day and even better tomorrow 🙂

So... what if the printer is working fine much of the time, and after paper jams (frequent) are resolved the printer still shows offline? Is there a quick and easy way to get my Windows 10 system to acknowledge that and resend the the job? I haven't figured this out. Sometimes it takes an hour or more for the status to reset, most frustrating.

Of course the the HP Print and Scan Doctor doesn't help here. First, because it has to update itself every time it runs, and second because I have yet to find anything in it that lets me update the printer status. It usually gets hung up on that my color printer cartridge is very low on ink, which has been true for months. If I print in grayscale that shouldn't matter.

What I'm hoping for is a quick an easy "confirm the printer status" button that will let me easily print the job and keep moving with my day.

If you are still getting printer offline then try these steps once it will definitely fix the issue for you.

How to fix HP Printer offline to Online.

Step 1. Setup the Wireless Connection again with the router.
Step 2. Uninstall the old printer from the computer.
Step 3. Add Printer again on the computer from the control panel.
Step 4. After installing the printer restart your Printer and the Computer.
Step 5. There will an IP Address on the printer try to open it on the computer browser like chrome or firefox like, 192.169.0.10 i.e or
10.0.0.12.
Step 6. Once its open you can set the ip address as default for your Printer.
and it will be good to go never go offline again.
