HP 806DN PRINTER
Microsoft Windows XP

We noticed that the HP 806DN prints noticeably slower with our custom label stock than other printers in our environment. The HP 9050 and P4010 prints at ~40ppm with the custom label stock, but the 806DN is ~10ppm. Interestingly the first six or seven pages print out quickly (about 3s per page), but will slow after those initial (consistent 6s per page). Our print jobs average 40 pages and this decrease in speed has significantly impacted Operations. The custom label stock is 8.5x11”, about 24 weight, and has an adhesive label on the top 3rd of the page.

As a control, I tested using standard 8.5x11” 20 weight sheets on our 806DN. The first six or seven pages printed out quickly then consistently printed out at about ~40ppm. We tried printing with the latest drivers via network from a shared printer server (Windows 2012R2) and locally (USB) from a computer (Windows 7) with no noticiable difference in print speed.

We purchased ten 806DN printers in our environment that all behave the same. We intended to replace the 20 older HP 9050 and P4010 with the newer 806DN printers, but the slower print speed would be a deal breaker.

Any thoughts on what would cause the slow print speed? Our theory is that the fuser on the newer printer has a less powerful heat coil that takes longer to recharge during pages in the job. The 9050’s would take quite a while to warm up initially, but the pages come out faster and warmer to the touch.

The newer models indeed use a different fuser and that might be part of the problem. Especially with custom media or label stock where a hotter fuser is needed to ensure proper bonding. You might get some improvement if you ensure that the firmware is up to date, I do not think the driver is going to make that much of a difference for this performance parameter.
