HP App incorrectly identifies 3301cdw as generic 3301

I have an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301cdw, product 74T92F, serial VND3L05867.

HP Support and my HP account correctly identify this serial number as an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301cdw. However, the current HP app for macOS identifies the connected printer as “HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301,” reports product 74T92A, and displays incorrect generic printer artwork.

I have already reinstalled the HP app, removed and re-added the printer, recreated the macOS printer queue, and verified the HP account record. Printing, scanning, and network connectivity all work normally.

Could an HP moderator please escalate this as a possible HP app device-catalog/model-mapping issue?

The product serial number is considered private information.

I will notify the moderators -- it is generally much faster if you edit your own message.

It is normal for the HP App to generalize the model and use the series as the representative name of the printer.  This is not a "just you" occurrence.

If you like, you can change the name and use a nickname that fully describes the printer as you want it done.

The product number might be generalized, too -- A vs. F --

In so much as it identifies the product in the application, the A or F is insignificant in terms of the HP App supporting the product.

Artwork might necessarily be generic -- It's perhaps annoying but does not impact any of the service points.

Yes, as a matter of meeting your concerns, I will forward your comments to our Moderators.

Should there be a response, look for a message here before the agent uses other means to contact you.

-- What about HP App? --

At some point, perhaps even now, HP Smart will no longer be available in the  Microsoft Store  .

There are at least two possible consequences to this:

  • Were there a version fix for the reported HP Smart "Scan - Save - Off-Center" bug, it can be more difficult to actually obtain a fixed version of the HP Smart app.
  • Any constant request to update HP Smart is perhaps because the app cannot be updated through the conventional means.   There are caveats to that comment, none of which matter in context.
