MFP 178 179
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP Color Laser Jet MFP 178 179 refuses to print back and white only, when printing from online applications/tools. If I save the print job as a pdf, then I can print in back and white only.  I've checked every setting I can think of, but no luck. Any ideas? Thanks.

@cjb37416,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

From which application/tool you are printing?

Meanwhile, I recommend you root uninstall the printer and then reinstall it and check if it helps.

Here is how it is done.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Restart the PC

14.) Download and install the printer software from the below link.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. As far as what applications, most are online tools I use for my job; i.e., real estate multiple listing services, county tax records, county GIS maps, DotLoop online forms & contracts, etc.  I use Chrome as my browser.

When I print from Word, Excel, or a PDF, everything prints correctly.

Thanks again. Happy Labor Day

Sorry for the delayed response. Business has been hectic. I finally found time to uninstall and reinstall the printer, as per your directions.  Unfortunately it didn't work. When I'm printing from within an online application, and I specify "black & white," it still prints in color.

The attached picture is an example. As you can see I have specified "black and white," and the print preview is black and white. However, when I print it the result comes out in color.

If for the "destination" I choose to "print to a pdf file," when I open the pdf I can print in color or B&W. But that adds extra steps to the process, and requires me to save every document I want to print.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

@cjb37416,

I recommend you click on more settings at the bottom and go the color tab in the printer properties window and select black and white and then print and check.
