Bought as a Mail Order return, the ADF jams when scanning.
It looks as if the previous recipient had tried to tear off the very thin plastic strip next to the ADF glass (name of item not know - [separator?]) which I think is used when  double-sided ADF documents. The resultant damage causes the fed document to foul the strip.

Can the strip be replaced? Or is it more complicated?

That strip is essential for scanning. Yes it can be replaced. Part Number is  B3Q10-00060

You can purchase through the HP parts store or find a vendor on a platform like Ebay.
