HP Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M479fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have had the HP Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M479fdw for several months and am now experiencing an issue where tray 2 will not close.  There is nothing jamming it or in the way to cause the drawer not to close.  I have disconnected the power cord for about 10 min. then plugged back into the wall then the printer and it still won't close.  It did pop up that tray 2 was raising so the paper could be loaded but the tray was not in there.  It sticks out about 2 1/2" and the paper tray is set for letter and it is set for letter in the settings.  Any suggestions?

When you set the tray for legal the front part of the tray has to move out. The back stop for letter can be moved back to letter, even if you do not move the legal extension in. There is a button on the right inside of the tray door that  you push and will allow you to slide the legal extension back in.

Thank you @Repairtrooper.  The button to collapse my drawer back down to letter was actually in the front but i finally found it and got it fixed.  THANK YOU!!

It is the design of the tray and lingo used that causes confusion. The backstop on these units is at what people consider the front of the tray, but backstop refers to the device that holds the paper in the right position to feed and is opposite the end of te tray that has the pickup roller. Glad to hear you got it sorted out.

I had the same issue. The tray, when it sticks out that far, is designed for legal paper. If you have regular copy paper in the tray, just push the guides in at the back of the tray.

Hope that helps.(I searched on You Tube and found a video that helped me solve the issue.)
