I've tried setting the Sleep/Auto-off to various settings including 1 Minute, 5 Minutes, 15 Minutes, etc.
Just doesn't work. Printer just always stays on.
What the heck is wrong? Firmware is up to date.
I also know that "delay when ports are active" ONLY applies to shutoff, NOT Sleep/Auto-off. So please don't give me that suggestion. I tired it anyways, made no difference. I set the Sleep/Auto-off timer to "AFter 1 minute"
It's been over 30 mins, printer is still on. Has never gone into sleep mode.
Pretty disappointed that I have to even troubleshoot this on a $500+ printer 😞
Please help.

Hi there,
Just got this printer today and had the same problem... the little wirring fan was driving me crazy...
Updated the firmware from here (version 20170728) and it fixed the problem.
After that turned it off and on, reset the Sleep/Auto Off After Inactivity timer to 1 minute on the actual printer (rather than the web page)... not sure if that had anything to do with it...
But the printer is now silient... power button/light flashing... yay 🙂
Hope it helps someone...

Bummer...
What else did we do... I turned off Wireless, we have a fixed ethernet connection so are just using that...
Also turned off WifiDirect... might use it later, but not now... maybe that has something to do with it?
Turned off IPv6, not using that...
Don't recall turning anything else off...
I did untick the "Delay when ports are active option" but I see you already tried that...
Good luck 🙂

I am having the same issue with the m477fdw. It is used in a large workspace with about 6 or so people in there on average. It seems like the printer will sleep for about a minute and then power up (loudly) like it is going to print (fans and I think it has rollers going), stays on for another minute (fans on), then sleeps again. This cycle repeats all day and drives the people in the room crazy which I can't blame them. It is to the point where the usually leave it turned off and walk 50 feet away to a Canon printer to print to in order to avoid the constant noise from the HP printer. So what was meant as a wee investment to save people time has become an overpriced paperweight saving no time.
I have played around with every setting I can think of. I've turned off such things as anything wifi or web related, reduced sleep timers, etc. Then I tried going in the opposite direction thinking that the printer being on constantly with the fan going may be somewhat annoying but not as annoying as the loud whirring of the power up cycle (that's just what I am calling it, I'm not sure exactly what it is) every minute or two, but that didn't do it either. I even tried removing the network cable which one would think would leave the printer nothing to do but to sleep, but it still repeated the sleep/wake cycle.
So I'm at a loss as to what to do. Is this particular printer a lemon or is there whole M477fdw product no good?

There is zero chance. It was already up to date. I figured out that it was actually an outbound fax stuck pending. There is no phone line plugged into this printer but someone must have tried to use it to fax at some point. I had to clear the memory (power off, power on, press bottom right quadrant of screen when HP logo appears, release when message about memory comes up) and after the fax was removed it slept like a baby.
