here is the part:

I recently ordered an HP 4 Multipurpose Input Tray HP RG5-0472-000 MP Tray Assembly

There in the dark is a spring that attaches some how; I do not know.  And the posts for the hinge appendages are not round, and the angle of the part is such that it will not fit as is.

Manual attached.  You will likely need to disassemble some parts to reseat it. Do not force it, old plastics are extremely brittle. https://archive.org/details/printermanual-hp-laserjet-4---5-service-manual

Hello Repairatrooper,

Thank you for the Manual, but I have one and have looked at several iterations of it and many pictures of the area on the machine.  None of the instructions or pictures appear to address how to put this MP input tray back on.  I have yet to see how to little spring on the left functions.  All the instructions are for taking apart the feed drawer and MP tray.  It's already apart, I need help putting it back together.

In order to properly reinstall the manual tray you are going to have to remove the pickup assembly from the printer. This will require removing the top, both sides, the right front cover where the font cartridge slot is and then removing the pickup assembly itself. The manual should provide these instructions Chapter 6 page 18 lists the steps required.

This may sound stupid to you, but is what your are calling the pickup assembly  the same thing as the paper feed assembly?

I'll give you some pictures to show how it looks.

Just like Repairatrooper said  it will require removing right cover first, then top cover and left cover and the right front cover, then you'll see the metal  circled in the picture in magenta color which locked with two screws on both left/right most ends, screw them off, after that you can insert the Multipurpose Input Tray into its place,  attache the spring into its place (circled with magenta color), put everything back and it'll be done.

East2100,

Thank you for these real life photos.  They are much clearer than any of the published material and actually show the area in question, particularly how the spring attaches.

Just to clarify, I have to take all this apart, plus take the outer door off, in order to put the MP Tray  back on, right?

Is there anything else crucial that I need to know before attempting this.  I'm not at all mechanical, let alone tech savvy.

Thank you,

Kaye
