Hi @digital629, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

So, your HP LaserJet Pro 400 M451dn is throwing a bit of a fiesta, huh?  Cleaning mode rave, followed by a misprint message that looks like modern art gone wrong, and then it shyly spits out just one little copy when you were clearly hoping for a whole stack.  Sounds like your printer might be having a little… moment. 😉 But no worries, let's play printer whisperer and get this sorted!

Here's a little troubleshooting tango we can try, step-by-step, to coax your LaserJet back into its multi-copy groove:

Check Print Settings in macOS

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners
  • Select your HP LaserJet Pro 400 M451dn
  • Click Options & Supplies > Driver
  • Ensure that the correct driver is installed. If it's using AirPrint, switch to HP's driver instead.
  • Try printing multiple copies from a different app (e.g., Preview, Word, or Chrome) to see if the issue persists.

Reset Printing System

  1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners
  2. Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose Reset printing system
  3. Add your printer again by clicking +, selecting the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M451dn, and choosing HP’s driver (not AirPrint).

Disable Cleaning Mode in Printer Preferences

Your printer may have automatic cleaning enabled before printing, which could be disrupting the job:

  1. Open HP Utility (Applications > HP Folder)
  2. Look for Cleaning Mode settings and disable any automatic cleaning options.

Update Printer Firmware & Driver

  • Download and install the latest firmware for your printer from HP’s support page.
  • Ensure you have the latest HP Easy Start or HP Printer Drivers for macOS 10.13 installed.

Check Paper Type & Tray Settings

Misprint errors can be related to incorrect paper settings:

  • Open the printer’s web interface:
    • Find its IP address (print a Configuration Page from the printer menu)
    • Enter it in a web browser
    • Go to Paper Handling Settings
    • Ensure the correct paper type (e.g., Plain, A4) is selected
    • If duplex printing is on, try disabling it temporarily

I hope this helps.

Take care, print happy, and have a wonderfully copy-filled day!

hey max. thanks for the feedback. i eventually replaced the pick roller and now it works great. HOWEVER, i have another issue. when i try to print manually from tray 1, the printer pauses and i get a "jam in tray 2" message.

@digital629, Good to hear that replacing the pick roller fixed the previous issue! Now, regarding the "Jam in Tray 2" error when printing from Tray 1 manually, here’s what you can do:

  1. Check for Obstructions: Open tray 2 and check for any paper jams or obstructions. Remove any paper you find.
  2. Clean the Rollers: Sometimes, dust or debris on the rollers can cause jams. Clean the rollers in both tray 1 and tray 2 using a lint-free cloth and a bit of water or isopropyl alcohol.
  3. Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it for a few minutes, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear error messages.
  4. Check the Paper Path: Ensure there are no small pieces of paper stuck in the paper path. Use a flashlight to inspect the inside of the printer.
  5. Update Firmware: Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date.

If my response helped resolve your issue, kindly click “Accepted Solution” — it will help others find their way to the solution as well. And if you’d like to show appreciation, clicking the “Kudos/Thumbs Up” at the bottom right will let me know!

Take care and have an amazing day ahead!

Warm regards,
