Just to clarify, you replaced the drive, installed 3.9.4 firmware and now you scan to usb or backup to usb. Have you activated the usb ports through the firmware? Some revisions of firmware have the ports disabled as standard. I have no FS3 devices left on my network but typically it will be under security settings.
