I have an HP LaserJet M15a printer that works correctly in Windows 10, while it does not print with Mac OS X Catalina. The printer is detected is online, I see the job in the spooler but the printing does not start and no error is reported. If I use HP Smart to print with printer on and correctly connected the message "Unknown printer status" is reported and the result is the same.

@AlessandroRM76, Welcome to HP Support Community!
I see that the printer does not print from your Mac Computer but gets stuck in the queue. Let us try to isolate and resolve the issue. Follow the steps below-
Go to System Information to check the USB detection- try different port and cable if not detected
If the computer is unable to detect the printer over a USB connection, restart the computer, the printer, and check the cable connection.
-
Turn off the printer and your computer, and then disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
-
Inspect the cable.
-
Look for any damage. If the cable is damaged, replace the cable.
-
Check the length of the cable. If the cable is more than 3 m (9 ft 10 in) in length, replace the cable with one that is shorter.
-
-
Connect the cable to a different USB port on the computer. The port should be USB 2.0 or greater. If you use a USB hub or docking station, connect the cable directly to the computer.
-
Make sure the cable is fully secured to both ports.
-
Turn on the computer, and then wait for the computer to complete the startup.
-
Turn on the printer.
Update the printer firmware
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

It is an operating system problem using the same cable and the same computer with Windows 10 (installed through Bootcamp) the printer works. I also did the firmware update. The jobs do not get stuck in the spool, they continue to the end but it is as if no commands were sent to the printer.

I'd suggest you reset the printing system on Mac and try adding the printer again.
Resetting the printing system removes all printers and scanners from the printers queue and clears all print jobs and print settings from the system, including printers and scanners that are not from HP. Resetting the printing system can be useful for troubleshooting printing problems, but you need to add all of your printers and scanners back to the list when you are finished.
-
Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
-
Click Printers & Scanners, Print & Scan, or Print & Fax.
-
Right-click (or Control + click) anywhere inside the Printers window, and then click Reset printing system.
Figure : Clicking Reset printing system
-
Click Reset or OK.
-
If prompted, type your username and password, and then click OK.
The printing system resets.
-
Turn off the printer, wait 5 seconds, and then turn on the printer.
-
Wait until the printer is idle and silent.
-
In the Printers window on the Mac, click the Add button
-
Select your printer from the list, and then click Add.
It might take a few seconds before your printer displays in the Printers list.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I have already tried all the procedures described on the HP site, including this one. I think this printer is not compatible with Mac Os X 10.15.3 (Catalina) probably due to the security restrictions introduced in this version. It should be understood if the wireless version (M15w) works correctly.

Disable and internet security software and test.
If the issue persists then uninstall HP software and install the driver. Refer to the document https://support.hp.com/my-en/document/c02440673 for help.
Use this link to download and install the printer drivers- https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-m14-m17-printer-series/16647043/mod...
Configure the printer and try printing.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
