We are using an HP LaserJet MFP E73140 with multiple paper trays configured. Tray 3 is set as the primary tray for printing. However, when Tray 3 becomes empty, the printer does not automatically pick paper from Tray 2, even though Tray 2 contains the same paper size and type.

Our requirement is for the printer to automatically switch to Tray 2 when Tray 3 is empty, without prompting the user to load paper or manually select another tray.

We have verified that:

  • Tray 2 and Tray 3 are configured with the same paper size and paper type

  • Tray 2 contains sufficient paper

  • The issue occurs across multiple print jobs and users

Please advise on the correct tray settings, paper handling configuration, or firmware options required to enable automatic tray fallback from Tray 3 to Tray 2 on the HP LaserJet MFP E73140.

Change use requested tray to "when available"
