HP LaserJet pro MFP M281fdw
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Dear communioty & HP support team,

I have just attempted to set up my brand new HP LaserJet pro MFP M281fdw. On booting up, I was able to select language and that the device will be self-serviced. Then the device asked for paper, which I inserted.

Subsequently, the display on the device has turned white, with no options, buttons or anything else to click/tap. Upon erading up here in the forum, I read that a power drain was recommended, and I followed those steps to the letter. The result is still the white screen every time the printer starts.

Please can you advise on steps for a hard reset to factory settings. Please note I cannot use the screemn/menus!

Many thanks in advance,

HG

Thanks for posting on the HP Support Forums. MKazi is at your service.

I understand that while trying to setup your new HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw. However, the printer's display screen has turned white. You have performed a power drain on the printer and the issue persists.

You have done a remarkable job in troubleshooting this issue.

Please check if the power drain was performed in the below format:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector.
  • Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

If the power drain was already perform as described above then you may refer to my private message to perform a NVRAM reset on the printer.

I sincerely hope this information helps. Please feel free to keep me posted for further assistance.

Cheers! 🙂

After performing a power drain on my M281fdn the display ist still wihite. What else can I do?

Juergen, for me that didn’t solve it either. I had to return the unit and get an exchange from Amazon (who were brilliant at doing that with no quarrels). New printer’s display works perfectly.

I don’t think it’s a software issue or something that a reset/power drain would ever fix. Rather looks like a hardware failure that, judging by how frequently it seems to occur, appears to be linked to faulty or lower-quality components built into the device.

The display of my printer worked fine during the setup. Then I turned the printer off and did some other work. After about 2 hours I turned the printer back on and the display shows only white.

I contacted the Cyberport service hotline (Germany) and they told me that I  have to return the printer to Cyberport. They will send me a new one within a few days. Thank you for your message.

Yes, pretty much exactly the same sequence of events I had. Get it replaced, it’s a great printer when it works, just a shame the display appears to be playing up so much...
