HP M277dw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, everyone. Can someone please confirm for me that you can still use AFTERMARKET toner cartridges with the latest firmware update for the M277dw (FW v20191203)?

Right now my printer is at 20160921 and it has the option in the settings to disable the cartridge check, but I do not want to update the firmware if I am going to lost the ability to use aftermarket cartridges. On that same note, can someone supply me with a working link to the installer for the 20160921 firmware (I cannot find it anywhere) in case I want to downgrade the firmware after I bump to the latest (IF I bump to the latest)?

Thank you all for your time.

Hi @45N0130

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Hp does not recommend the use of non-HP or refilled ink toners. It may or may not work.

According to the details for the latest firmware ver 20191203 on the HP Support site, there is no mention of any changes related to the ink toner settings.

You may click here to download the latest firmware for the printer and also to check the details.

The printers affected with the firmware update are listed in this document and HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw is not one among them.

Note: Once the firmware is updated, you cannot downgrade it to the previous version.

I hope this answers your concern.

@Kumar0307 - while I appreciate you taking the time to reply, I definitely do not appreciate the corporate boilerplate rhetoric that you have served-up. There are many aftermarket toner manufacturers who make the same, if not better, quality toner that will cause no issue whatsoever with the printer. The only reason a toner cartridge "may not work" is if HP would disallow the use of an aftermarket unit. Secondly, the M277dw does most definitely have a firmware version 20191203 listed for it on the support website: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laserjet-mfp-m277-series/7089945/model/708...

Lastly, I know with 100% certainty that you can downgrade firmware, as there is an option within the printer to allow such a downgrade and I have accomplished this before. I wish your company could just be honest and forthcoming when a very simply question is asked, instead of just referencing release notes that wouldn't have this feature change listed anyway.
