HP MFP 477fdn (CF378A) auto duplex

We purchased some of these printers with the idea of having auto duplex printers.

But to my surprise when i tried printing a pdf on 2 sides it ended up telling me to put the paper in tray 2.

Which to me is manual duplex printing.

Can anybody tell me if there something special that needs to be done?

According to the User Guide on page 22, you are to load paper in tray 2 for duplexing.

If there is a d in the model number it should have a built-in duplexer.

If it asked you to load paper in tray two you probably specified a paper type other than what it thought was in tray 2.

This appears to be an issue with the Windows driver.  (I have a 477fdn and hapilly duplexed 50 copies an hour ago without having to re-insert the paper.)

If you load the PDF on a thumb drive and stick it directly in the printer, you should be able to tell it to print the file using 2 sides, at which point it will duplex automatically.  Additionally, Apple/OSX appears to understand this printer natively and duplexes just fine for me.  You can also use the "Google Drive" web service on the printer and print duplex from there.

I actually found this thread while trying to solve this exact same issue; I'll try to remember and post back here if/when I find the solution on Windows.

Ah-ha!  Found the solution.  Thanks to Mayur of HP support for the guidance.

Basically when you install the driver on Windows, it defaults to thinking you don't have a duplexer installer.  This is easily remedied.

Here are the directions for Windows 7:

1. Open the Devices and Printers Control Panel
   • You may easily do this by pressing "Win"+R and typing "control printers"
2. Right-Click on your M477 printer
3. Select "Printer properties"
4. In the window that opens, if you see a button near the middle left that has a shield and says "Change Properties", click it.  If it isn't there you already have admin rights and can skip this step.
   • This will open the Windows UAC control; you will need admin rights to continue.
5. Click the "Device Settings" tab.
6. Change the "Duplex Unit" drop-down from "Not Installed" to "Installed"
7. Click "OK".
8. You are done!  Windows now recognized that your printer has a duplexer and it will allow you to print with auto-duplexing instead of manual duplexing.
