Hi @silviagimenez

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for reaching out. I understand that your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M426fdn is configured with an IBM i (iSeries) Remote Output Queue, and although the spool file is being sent to Tray 1, the printer is attempting to print from Tray 2 and displays a message requesting a paper change.

This behavior is commonly related to a mismatch between the paper source, paper size, or paper type specified in the IBM i spool file and the tray configuration stored on the printer.

Please review the following:

  1. From the printer's control panel, verify the paper size and paper type assigned to both Tray 1 and Tray 2.
  2. Confirm that the paper loaded in Tray 1 matches the paper size and type defined in the IBM i spool file attributes.
  3. Check the Remote Output Queue settings and the Workstation Customizing Object (WSCST), if used, to ensure Tray 1 is being explicitly requested.
  4. Print a Configuration Page from the printer and verify the tray settings reported by the device.
  5. If the printer driver or emulation settings were recently changed on the IBM i side, test with a newly created spool file to see if the tray selection behavior changes.
  6. Ensure Tray 1 is not configured as a Manual Feed tray. If Manual Feed is enabled, the printer may pause and request media even when paper is available in another tray.
  7. Restore the paper handling settings to their default values and then reconfigure Tray 1 with the correct size and type.

If the issue continues, please let us know:

  • The paper size loaded in Tray 1 and Tray 2
  • Whether Tray 1 is configured as Manual Feed or a standard cassette
  • The printer's current firmware version
  • The exact paper size/type defined in the IBM i spool file

This information will help us review the tray-selection behavior more closely and provide the next appropriate troubleshooting steps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
