HP LJ M281FDW
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I currently have this printer: HP LJ M281FDW

When Scanning from the touch to the computer, there is popup screen asking me which program to use.  The program I wish to handle my scans is the HP Smart app that was installed with the printer.  However it does not appear.

Upon further research. I tried if I could change the settings. By going to the following:

1. Click "Start" button and click "Control Panel"

2. Click "Devices and Printers"

3. Select your printer and right click --> click "Scan Properties"

4. Select "Events" tab

.... and got the following:

If you notice HP Smart does not appear under the list of options under the dropdown menu.  Please advise.  Also after I need help set the scan from the touchscreen function to use the feeder not the platen.

Welcome to Hp support Community!

To enable the scanning from the touchscreen to your computer, you have to install the complete software available for your printer -

https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-multifunc...

Click on the link. Download and install the full solution software.

Once installation is complete, Sreach for the printer name in the search bar of your computer. It would launch the printer assistant window. Check for manage scan to computer and mle sure its enabled.

Now you could try to scan to computer from the touchscreen.

For HP smart issues, please refer the document below -

I have the printer assistant window open:

But I cannot find

"Check for manage scan to computer and mle sure its enabled"   where is "check manage to scan option"  and where to enable "mle"?

1. Click on the printer Icon (on your desktop) and it will bring up the HP Printer Assistant.
2. Under the Scan menu, there is a “Manage Scan to Computer”, click on that.
3. Make sure that you “Enable” Scan to Computer. Also make sure the tab “Automatically start Scan to Computer when I log on to Windows” is checked if you want to make this feature permanent. (the following video will show you how)

Hi,

Apologies for jumping in, but to clarify - HP Laserjet Printers such as the M281 does not support front panel scanning to a computer.

Scanning from a computer can only be done from the HP Scan or the HP Smart software, not from the printer itself.

To set up front panel scanning through a network connection you may set up direct scanning to Email or a  Network Folder, that can be done from the printer display itself.

As a reference see Page 51 of its user guide below, it includes any available scanning option for your printer:

Thats odd.  Because from the printer touchscreen, under the scan menu, there are two separate options, "Scan to Network Folder" and another for "Scan to Computer".

This allows scanning on Windows 10 using WSD Discovery and allows scanning through Windows Scan and Fax, with basic scan capabilities only (Picture scanning to JPG, BMP, from the Scanner Flatbed only, no PDF scanning available as an example).

This is not a feature provided by the HP Scan Software and therefore not described as part of the HP Software functionality.
