HP Smart MUST be updated to support duplex scanning.  This is a horrible issue for people like me that have multiple-page double-sided documents we scan in on a regular basis.  To purchase a $400 printer/scanner for this purpose and have an update forced upon me like this is very disagreeable.  Please rectify this issue immediately.

HP Smart should support ADF automatic duplex scanning on those printers that include the feature.

If this is your printer

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

then

According to the information in the specifications, this printer does not support Duplex ADF scanning.

Product Specifications for the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw (T6B82A)

Duplex ADF scanning
No

If the printer does not support the feature, HP Smart cannot offer it.

I may have used the wrong term.  Prior to this update to hp smart, when I opened the scanner, it gave me an option for manual two sided scanning.  I would run the pages through the scanner and it would show a window to put the pages back into the tray to scan the backside.  It would then put everything in the correct order.  Is there a way to still do manual 2 sided scanning?

I cannot confirm that the application has updated - my own HP Smart is stable at  V10.1.671.0

?    Means nothing, of course.  My workstation does what it likes to some extent and I intervene as necessary to manage the larger HP and Windows Updates.

Is it the printer?  The App?  "Something else"?

I am not familiar with the vagaries of Laserjet printers .

In general, though, when something goes awry with the printer software (at least the Full Solution Software package), there is the chance that the "Duplexer" will show up as "uninstalled".  Considering that your printer does not support the automatic duplexer, the idea of "installed" may not apply.

Nonetheless, a possible check point:

Pre-check – Ensure Duplex is set to “Installed”

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on Printer >

Printer Properties > tab Device Settings > Under Installable Options > Duplex Unit = Installed > OK

HP Smart is an application that is downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Store.

The App can be reset or even uninstalled in Apps and Features

NOTE:  Reset is located in Settings > Apps > Apps and Features > Click on the application > Advanced

If removing the application, after the "uninstall", Restart the computer and log in.

Open the Windows Store > Search, find, download, and install a fresh copy of the HP Smart Application
