Have shut off/restarted printer multiple times, removed/replaced printer tray
guessing tray sensor not working -but could this be a printer driver issue?
all ideas welcome!

If the empty paper tray message is on the screen of the printer this will have nothing to do with the driver.

Try this; Remove the toner cartridges and the paper tray and press the green button in the tray cavity to lower the duplex tray. Then turn the printer onto it's left side so you can easily see the paper path and check around the pickup rollers at the back of the tray cavity for any bits of paper.

Many thanks to Repairatrooper - found a small piece of paper under printer after following clear directions.
Did not find green button on my printer, but didn't need it either.
You are the BEST for quick reply that worked!
