The HP support page telling users what to do about print jobs stuck in print queue is DEAD WRONG. It must be replaced IMMEDIATELY.  This also is supposed to fix the problem I had -- my MFP M426fdw would print a few pages and then go through a whole tray of paper printing gibberish at the top of the page.

The support page requiring IMMEDEDIATE replacement is: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2026148-1648338-16

Here is why the above is dead wrong:

1. First of all, it is far to wanky for most people to do.  Secondly, there are some items that cannot be deleted even with admin permissions.

2. When you delete all the files in the win32 spooler directory, it destroys the PC.

  1. I wipes out all printers connected to your PC.
  2. You cannot uninstall or printers because the directories needed for uninstall information are gone.
  3. You cannot reinstall printers because the directories installers place file in are gone.
  4. It causes problems with USB ports not working.  My mouse and keyboard quit working.

Here is the correct answer for Windows:

  1. Have the user run chkdsk c: -r -f.  This will fix all corrupt files on the PC including the corrupt spooler file.
  2. Suggest using the shortest possible USB printer cable, and route it so it is not laying next to AC cables (which can disrupt USB communications.  Be sure you are using a shielded USB cable.
  3. Users whose PCs were destroyed by the above support page should be told to restore the deleted directories located in the Recycle Bin and reboot the PC. Users will then need to uninstall and reinstall all their printers.  If the files are no longer there, the user will probably have to reinstall windows.

I do not know about Apple.  Somebody needs to call out a similar process for Apple.

Last:  The idiot(s) who wrote the above support page should be fired and exported to Hell.  PLS FIX THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY - YOU ARE DESTROYING PEOPLES COMPUTERS.  I recovered by restoring the deleted directories from the Recycle Bin.
