HP Color LaserJet Enterprise CM4540 MFP
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The hard drive in one of our network printers went bad. The printer was reading "No Boot Disk." So, I ordered a replacement. The new drive came in with a set of instructions on how to replace the bad disk. Everything went fine until I got to the part where I'm supposed to upload the new Firmware.

Step 21 in the instructions (CC419-679) says to select "4 Clear Disk Pass," however, it's crossed out and "unavailable."

And, that's just it...

I can't select it, so I'm stuck.

I tried skipping that step, and just moving on to the Download from USB Thumbdrive step, but the printer won't recognize that there's even a thumbdrive plugged in (It is, it's formatted per the instructions, and has the firmware on it).

I don't know what to do at this point, and the instructions don't have any notes about what to do if one of the steps just flat-out doesn't work.

Any ideas are welcome because I've scoured the internet for a full day to no avail.

Thanks!

- Will

When replacing HDD you had to remove main PCA, there should be USB connector on main PCA for USB stick drive. If you use that connector on main PCA is then USB recognised with firmware?

Yes, but it's a USB-B connection only, so I'll have to find an adapter. The instructions say to use the USB slot on the control panel, but I'll try anything at this point. I'll report back later with my findings.

Thanks.

You need to remove the main board out of the printer and on the board electronics should be a connector for USB stick. Then you insert USB stick, insert board in the printer and proceed with a firmware update.

Ah! Okay. I don't remember seeing one on the board, but I'll make sure to check when I get back to that office. Running a few other tickets right now, but I'll report back later.

Thanks!

Okay,

I was able to try your suggestion, but ended up with these errors:

Another thing that concerns me is that I wasn't able to complete step 21 of the instructions sent with the hard drive which says to "Select 4 Clear Disk Pass."

On the printer I'm working on, I get this:
