Hello Community,

my printer “swallowed” when pulling a sheet over tray 1, i.e. he tried it twice, didn’t even get the sheet (because it was a little wavy) and then gave up with the error message: “Close upper tray”. This message remains even though there is nothing to close (for safety’s sake I took out the printer cartridge once and put it back in again, as I do with real printer jams).

Fact is: The printer insists that the top tray is open (which it isn’t), even after countless turns on and off. Now I want to do a hard-disk initialization, but I can’t figure out which button should be the “Pause/resume button”.

Who can tell me this? Does anyone have a solution to my problem other than a hard disk initialization? (I have already done a cold reset.)

Regards,

Ransom7

Pause/resume button should be the Menu button ( bottom left).

Hello Valsimot,

Thank you for your answer. The Menu button was the searched one.

The next problem I have is that I always get to "INITIALIZE DISK", but as soon as I want to confirm this with the Select button, the printer continues with "Continuing Boot Sequence".

Do you or anyone else know any advice?

The 2420 series did not come with a harddrive, I believe what you want to do is a cold reset. Turn the power off, turn the power on and when the screen lights up, hold down the "go" green button until all lights on top of printer come on steady. Use the arrow keys to change options until you see "cold reset". Press Ok and unit will restart with all settings back to factory. If you have an optional harddisk installed, then the format option for the drive will be accessed the same way.

If you find the information provided useful or solves your problems, help other users find the solution easier by marking my post as an accepted solution. Clicking "yes" on "was this reply helpful" also increases the chances that this solution will help others.

Hello Repairatrooper,

Thank you for your trouble. I had already done the cold reset (see outgoing mail, last sentence).

I don’t know what you mean when you say "the 2420 series did not come with a harddrive", but a hard-disk initialization is planned, see here:

Any other ideas?

The printer never came originally with the hard drive, you needed to buy and install EIO hard drive into the back of the printer as an accessory then you can perform Hard disk initialization.

What is your current status on the front panel when you turn the printer ON?

Hello Valsimot,

Thanks for staying tuned.

The Printer starts in the front panel immediately with the counting of the memory/storage. When he has finished, the hp-logo appears next.

It seems to me to be the nominal self-test that the printer always does when he is turned on. However, the heater (or whatever) doesn't work if you turn on the printer, which it has always done.

What is a message on the front panel 1 minute after you turn printer On?

Hello Valsimot,

The message on the front panel is:

CLOSE TOP COVER For help press ?

No reset will help you getting Close top cover dissapear. You need to locate door switch on the right side, and check both the switch and the part on the front door that operates the switch. Page 224 of the service manual.
