How can I find a Driver for HP3600N Printer for Windows 11

Hi @DanOt14 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

HP has not released a dedicated Windows 11 driver for the older HP Color LaserJet 3600n. This is a very common issue with legacy printers as operating systems evolve.

The best workaround is often to rely on the built-in Windows driver update service.

However, since the original drivers are only listed up to Windows 10 (64-bit), we can usually bridge this gap successfully by using a few advanced techniques that leverage existing Windows compatibility and the printer's core language.

Here are the best ideas to add to the existing solution, focused on ensuring full functionality on Windows 11:

Advanced Driver Workarounds for HP Color LaserJet 3600n

Since the HP 3600n is a PostScript Level 3 and PCL 6 capable printer, we can often substitute its driver with one from a very similar, supported model.

1. Use the Windows 10 Driver in Compatibility Mode (The Direct Approach)

Even if HP doesn't list a Win 11 driver, the underlying kernel is similar.

  • Action: Download the latest Windows 10 (64-bit) driver package from the link you provided.

  • Installation: Before running the installer file (setup.exe or similar), right-click on it, go to Properties, select the Compatibility tab, and check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 10."

  • Result: This often forces the installer to run without detecting the newer OS version mismatch, allowing it to install the full driver suite, including the correct PPD/settings files.

2. Substitute with a Generic HP Universal Driver (The Reliable Fallback)

HP often releases Universal Print Drivers (UPD) that support a wide range of older LaserJet models. These drivers are frequently updated to maintain compatibility with new versions of Windows.

  • Action: Search the HP website specifically for the latest HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) for Windows 11.

  • Setup: During the installation of the UPD, choose the Traditional Mode (Dynamic) option and let the installer detect the HP 3600n. If it's not detected, install the driver for the HP Color LaserJet 4700 or another similar older color model that supports PostScript and PCL 6.

    • Why this works: The printer's core functions (printing text, graphics, and color) rely on the standard PCL 6 and PostScript commands, which are identical across many different LaserJet models.

3. Manual Driver Install via Device Manager (Leveraging Windows Update Files)

If Windows Update fails to install the driver, you can manually point the system to the driver files that Windows Update should have installed.

  • Action: When adding the printer manually through the Control Panel  Devices and Printers  Add a printer process:

    • Choose to install the driver "From a list of available drivers on your computer."

    • Select the manufacturer HP and look for the HP Color LaserJet 3600 series in the list.

    • If the 3600 is not listed, try installing the driver for the HP Color LaserJet 3800 or 4700 from that same list.

The most successful combination of approaches for legacy printers on Windows 11 is to try the Windows 10 driver in Compatibility Mode first. If that fails, move to the latest HP Universal Print Driver (UPD), manually selecting a known compatible model like the HP Color LaserJet 4700 during setup.

Please , do let me know if you need any other assistance, will be happy to assist you

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask any other queries as well.
