I have a LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw.  It never works. It's saying its offline. Its supposed to be on wifi right now. I plugged in a usb and still nothing. Does this thing not work on usb? Can someone explain to me how to get it to work on usb? Im out of patience with this thing. Its either I get it to work or its going in the garbage. Im not even sure i want it to work, this printer has been straight up garbage from the start. It feels like everything HP is just made to make people miserable and angry. Im not going to sit here and reset everything over and over again just to make this stupid thing connect. If there is no fix, then can someone here please recommend a printer from a different brand.

Hi @NS1988,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand that dealing with printer setup issues can be frustrating, but let's try some steps to connect your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw using a USB cable and solve the offline issue:

Check the USB Cable Connection:

  • Ensure the USB cable is properly connected to both the printer and your computer. Use a high-quality USB cable for reliable data transfer.
  • Avoid using USB hubs or docking stations; connect directly to the computer's USB ports.

Install the Required Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support Website to download the latest printer drivers for your operating system.
  • Install the downloaded driver for a USB connection. During installation, choose the "USB connection" option when prompted.

Verify Printer Settings:

  • Make sure the printer is turned on, and USB mode is enabled in the settings.
  • Look for any "Online" settings in the printer menu to switch from WiFi to USB mode if necessary.

Check Printer Status:

  • Go to the "Devices and Printers" section on your computer.
  • Right-click on your printer icon and make sure "Set as default printer" is selected.
  • Check if the printer status is "online" and not paused.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug the USB cable and power cable, wait for a minute, then reconnect the cables and power on the printer.

Check Computer Settings:

  • Ensure the correct USB port is selected in the computer's printer settings.
  • Try different USB ports on your computer to rule out port-specific issues.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
