LaserJet M283fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I saw this question a few times  but the guy answering sent resolutions in PMs and that doesn't help anyone else.

I set the password on my Laserjet M283fdw and forgot, or mistyped it. You can't  click on Services>Factory Defaults becuase you need the password to get there. There is a Youtube video out there that shows how to reset  it via the touch screen on the printer: Factory Reset HP LaserJet M277dw - YouTube

What I did is shut off the printer. unplug it, hold the power button down for 15-30 seconds to discharge residual power and because that's what i do with everything else. Then plug it back in. press the power button, wait until you see the black screen with the loading bar appear, touch and hold your finger to the touch screen ( seems to be anywhere, I pressed in the middle) until you see "Permanent Storage Init.". Take your finger off. try to get into services> system setup, it should work now.

I'd also like to note that the password has a 16 character limit. If you're using a password manager, as I am, make sure it doesn't give you a password that's too long. I set it as a 20 character password after resetting. Locked out again. Removed a character each time until it worked at 16.

cool.

@MNIT, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

We have to perform an NVRAM reset on the printer to resolve this issue.

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
  • In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
