Laserjet M426
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Trying to install software for new M426 printer and the Installer fails each time. Finally got help and it was working (printer and scanner on usb). Another HP chat tech got it printilng but not scanning. I can print but not scan.  The CD and downloaded installer both crash and will not work. Need help getting both scan and print functions working.

There are two models in this series.  Download / install the correct version for your product.

Windows 7 Software for the "f" series:

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M426f-M427f Printer Series Full Software and Drivers

Windows 7 Software for the "plain" series:

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M426-M427 Printer Series Full Software and Drivers

If the software is "stuck" and won't install, try / consider:

Paraphrased solution

  • Open the Control Panel > Programs and Features, Uninstall the printer, Restart
  • Start the installation

If the printer balks at the network step during installation of the printer software,

  • Cancel the installation – leave install window open
  • Open the Device Manager and delete / remove the printer and any “unknown device” from relevant categories, leave the Device Manager open
  • Retry the installation

Details solution

Try following these steps and check if that may make any difference:

NOTE:  Forgive "numbering" errors - copy / paste into this post editor is somewhat "hit and miss".

  1. Open the Control Panel > Programs and Features, Uninstall the printer software
  • After the software is uninstalled, Restart the computer and log in.
  1. Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Remove /Delete instances of the printer
  2. While the software tries to install > Right-Click the Start Menu (Windows) icon > select Device Manager
  • Expand category 'Printers'
  • Delete any listed instance(s) of your printer model or Unknown Device: Right-Click and select Uninstall
  • Expand category ‘Imaging Devices
  • Delete any listed instance(s) of your printer model or Unknown Device: Right-Click and select Uninstall
  • Leave the Device Manager open

  1. Open the printer software and select Connect a New Printer
    • For Wired Connection: Select Wired Network, select printer, click Next
    • For Wireless Connection: Select Wireless, select printer, click Next

  1. On the Printer installation screen:
  • Click Cancel to stop the installation
  • Allow 20-30 seconds to cancel the installation and return to the “connection type” screen.
  • Repeat the steps again to select your printer and complete the network installation

  1. If the installation hangs
    1. Repeat at Step 3, this time expanding and removing the printer from Device Manager > WSD Print Provider
    2. Continue the installation

If you read my post I stated I used the CD that came with the printer and down loaded the correct software for my exact model and both installers failed during initializing. The install software DOES NOT work. Had to end last chat session before scan function was installed. Tech never followed up. My problem is I cannot install scan function. Please don’t tell me to run the software because the soft ware does not work.

I did read the post.  There is naught I can do with / about the CD.

The repair procedure I posted does work for some situations.

From your comments, it is obvious the solution did not work for you.

Having tried it, at least you know this is the case.

Failure is also a way to move forward by eliminating what does not work.

Have a nice New Years.
