HP LaserJet 1536dnf MFP
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My HP LaserJet 1536dnf MFP works fine until recently for unknown reason, the "printer properties" window can't be opened. It was a flash, seems the window open and closed immediately. I downloaded the HP print and scan doctor. When it checked my printer, it said there was an update for it. So I did the update but it was failed. Then my scanner icon disappeared from desktop.

1. Original issue: printer properties window won't open

2.  Used HP print and scan doctor reinstall the driver, reinstall failed.

3. My scanner icon from desktop disappeared.

I did some search for all my above issues

1. After failed reinstall, when I try the printer properties again, finally an error window pop up - hpmsn101.dll has stopped working error. I googled it and saw bunch of posts about this issue but couldn't find any solution.

2. Reinstall driver fail at connect to your device 99% due to take too long time. A lot of people had this problem and no solution answer those post.

3. After failed reinstall, scanner icon disappeared, I saw post about it. Someone suggested reinstall driver but reinstall is a fail for me. I found I can go to "Device and Printer", right click on HP printer icon, select "Start scan". I still can do the scan but this is total different from the scanner icon I had on the desktop. This new scan can only save as pictures. And there is no customized scan setting.

Can anyone help me please? TIA!

Restart the print spooler and try uninstalling the drivers-

Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.

Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.

Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.

Go to services again - Start the print spooler.

Now uninstall and reinstall the printer driver. Follow the steps below-

1) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2) Select your HP Printer

3) Select Uninstall

4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe”

😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab

9) Look for the HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10) Select Ok

11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12) Close Devices and Printers.

Now, download and install the full-featured software from here.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you try the Windows built-in drivers. Follow the steps below:

•    Go to Control Panel - Devices and printers - Click on "Add printer" and follow the on-screen instructions.

•    When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.

•    Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.

Refer to this document HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver for help

Keep the printer under observation for a day or two. Let me know the outcome.

Ok, one update for my third issue, Scanner icon disappeared. The scanner icon is not from HP. It is Readiris Pro 12. One complete different software. It seems to me that it was HP print and scan doctor uninstalled it.

Readiris Pro 12 is not included in "HP LaserJet M1536 Full Feature Software and Driver". It is under "Utility" on the driver download page according to HP support: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03945971

It took me 20 minutes to download driver but at 95% system prompted "Download failed".

Thanks a lot for your help. You are right. The only solution for my issue is uninstall and reinstall the driver. I did that and the issues are solved. Thanks.
