I have two teachers who have MacBook Air computers.   They print to a LJ 1606 printer that is networked and the printer was added to their computers using AirPrint.  No USB involvement.

The printer has a DHCP address but frequently the printer will go offline for some reason.   As a result, neither teacher can print to it.   When the printer goes offline, I can't access it via the browser.  When it goes offline, Bonjour doesn't see it either.  I am guessing it goes to sleep and loses the connection to it. Or the connection doesn't stay active when it is sleeping.

Typically, what I have to done is restart the printer then unplug the CAT5 cable and wait a few minutes for it to reconnect again to the network then it works again.  Teachers can print to again and I can access it via the browser until it stops working again.

Just to follow up, the printer was offline and sleeping (power button and status lights were dark), the network port was active with connection activity.  I woke up the printer and printed a config page but it said "initializing" rather than "Connected" under Status.  After waiting for a 1 minute, I printed out another config page and this time it displayed the IP number and "Connected" was under Status.   Now the printer is back online and it should be working again.

Obviously, I can access the printer via the browser and Bonjour does see the networked printer.

I did change the Auto Off to Disabled and IO Timeout to 1800 to see if that helps.

Thanks for the detailed follow-up — that’s excellent troubleshooting. From what you described, the printer was simply in a deep sleep state, and waking it up allowed the network stack to fully initialize again. That explains why the first configuration page showed “Initializing” before it eventually displayed the IP address and “Connected.”

A couple of points about the changes you made:

  • Auto Off Disabled: This ensures the printer won’t completely power down on its own, which should help avoid the “dark lights” situation you saw. It will still enter sleep mode, but it won’t shut off entirely.
  • I/O Timeout set to 1800 seconds: That’s a generous buffer (30 minutes). It reduces the chance of jobs being dropped if there’s a delay in communication between the host and printer.

Since Bonjour and the embedded web server are both responding, you’ve confirmed the printer is properly back online. If you want to go one step further in monitoring stability, you could:

  • Print a Network Configuration Page after a few hours of idle time to confirm it still shows “Connected.”
  • Check the Event Log in the printer’s EWS (Embedded Web Server) for any recurring network-related messages.
  • If you’re using DHCP, consider assigning a DHCP reservation or setting a manual IP to avoid address changes that could cause intermittent offline states.

It sounds like you’ve already taken the right preventive steps.

Just a follow up, after making some changes, that didn't resolve or improve the situation.   I checked this morning, it appears to be offline because I cannot access it via the browser.

I will consider performing a factory reset next to see if that helps.

Thanks for all your efforts @pfisher

Sure, try the reset and keep me posted on how it goes.
