Hello,

When I try to print, the printer pulls the paper from the feed-tray only halfway in and then stops and jams--and I get an error #5 on the printer screen.

I have checked all of the places where there might be jammed paper (behind tray, opened top, behind toner, back of printer and underneath) and have cleaned the roller, but nothing helps. Please advise if possible.

Thanks!

Hi @catlover82,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your Experiencing paper feed problems and jams in your laser printer can be frustrating. Here's a guide to help you resolve error #5, which indicates a paper feed problem:

Check the Paper:

  • Ensure the paper is loaded correctly in the tray. Adjust paper guides to match the size of the paper you're using.
  • Do not overfill the tray; it should be loaded to the recommended capacity.
  • Use clean, high-quality paper specified for laser printers to avoid jams due to paper quality.

Inspect and Clean the Rollers:

  • Clean the paper rollers thoroughly with a lint-free cloth moistened slightly with water.
  • Check that the rollers are not worn out. If they appear smooth or shiny, consider replacing them as they may not grip the paper effectively.

Verify Paper Path and Tray Alignment:

  • Confirm that all covers are properly closed and latched.
  • Check the alignment of the paper tray and ensure it is inserted fully and correctly.
  • Inspect paper separation pads for any damage or wear, as they help separate individual sheets of paper to prevent multiple sheets from feeding.

Examine Inside the Printer:

  • Double-check for small pieces of paper that might have torn off and are obstructing the path.
  • Open the rear door (if available) to check for jammed paper along the output paper path.

Update Firmware and Drivers:

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware and drivers are up to date by visiting the HP Support Website for updates specific to your printer model.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and power it on. This can reset any temporary errors.

Take care and have an amazing day!
