I can see how updating the driver etc. would work, but that assumes that the printer is visable, it is not, I have used the search for printers path, not there, Device Manager cannot see it.

Just extra info, I know the printer is live and connected. I tried to print a two page document before I started with the driver business. The printer reacted by drawing through and ejecting two blank pages, so something is getting through.

The printer has a parallel interface which is not supported by the motherboard, by any motherboards I expect. I have an extra card which provides the interface. Is it possible Windows can't see the printer because the interface card is "hiding" whatever is on the outside?

I still am unable to print. I rarely need to do so, but now, a document I need has bought this issue back to the forground. I try to print to the Laserjet, which if it is not turned on, fails immediately, fair enough. The print command gives me a list of printers, one of which is "LaserJet A4/Letter PCL6 Class driver". If I select this, it still does not print. Can you see from that message if the right driver is installed?

I had no replies here and sought the information elsewhere. My LaserJet works now.

Could you share please?  I mean, you took the time to say that your problem was solved, and it's not like you weren't helped here.  Just needed a few additional steps.

Hi:

See if this works...Download and save, but do not run the 7th file listed at the link below.  That is the 64 bit driver file.

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=LaserJet%204

Then download and install this free file utility.  The 2nd link at the top of the page is for 64 bit.

http://www.7-zip.org/

After you install 7-Zip, right click on the driver file you downloaded and saved.

Have 7-Zip Extract to:  and let it extract the file into its folder name.   Ignore any error reports you may get.

Once that is done, add your printer, and when you are asked to install the driver, click on Have Disk, and browse to the folder 7-Zip created>prnhp001, and select the HP LaserJet 4 printer from the list, and the driver should install.

OK. Since I built my new Win10 machine, I had believed there was no way to print to my network HP Laserjet 4M Plus. I routed things through my wife's computer. However, she's taking the bar exam in additional states now, and she needed to update to Win 10 to run the bar exams on site in those states. I had feared we'd lose access completely, but when her machine updated to Win 10, I was shocked to see that it was still able to print to the LJ4 just fine!

I started trying to find the driver for the other Win 10 machine. This one, which is Win 10 Pro 64 for Workstations. This is what I found:

The various win 7/8 drivers from the Windows update site don't work. Windows doesn't like them.

The HP universal PCL5e driver doesn't come up any more -- only the PCL6 driver.

Getting the LJ133EN1 and LJ133EN2 files offered up by HP self-service don't work.

The HP Laserjet 4 pcl 5e driver 4.3.2.200 doesn't work.

BUT... the HP universal PS windows 10 64-bit driver does work!

Go here:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Universal-Print-Driver-Series-for-Windows/503548...

Expand the first option, Driver-Universal Print Driver (3)

Select the second entry, HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PostScript (64-bit)

Install. I selected network printer and entered the TCP/IP... and DONE! I have a running LJ4 again!
