LaserJet Pro P1102W
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Tried for a long time to get the printer connected wirelessly to an exiting network.

Network comprises BT router and 2x DrayTek AP902 AP's. All PCs and MacBooks have no problems connecting to the AP's.

Downloaded the latest full s/w distribution form the HP site and ran the install on the 1102w. No problems until the 1102w looked for the  WiFi - then returned nothing (no SSIDs found). Tried to define the closest AP SSID, still returned nothing found.

Looked at the 1102w web page via the USB connection and noted that it only looks on Channel Nos. 10 or 11. Changed the AP to channel 10 (was running on 5) - this didn't solve the problem, the 1102w still returns no SSID's seen.

Looked at the details of the WiFi connection on a Win 7 machine, the only configuration I could find that may have impact is that AES encryption is active. What does the 1102w expect in the encryption stakes?

Wow, what should have been a 'no brainer' was a 'no runner' - any help/suggestions appreciated.

Well I think I have solved my own problem.

I found a very interesting Blog on the web (Sturmflut's Blog) dated January 2015 entitled "If you intend to buy a LaserJet Pro P1102w and want to connect it to a contemporary wireless network, don't buy it".

In a nutshell the key remarks were:

  • Only channels 6 and 11 are officially supported. Well I found that only channels 10 and 11 were selectable, but even after changing the DrayTek AP to channel 10 still nothing worked.
  • Only 802.11b and 802.11g are supported ... the P1102w doesn't seem to like it if the AP also offers 802.11n simultaneously. The DrayTek was configured to offer b, g  and n.
  • Only WEP and WPA-PSK are supported. The P1102w doesn't seem to like it if the AP simultaneously offers WPA and WPA2. Who uses WEP or WPA-PSK in 2017?

I then asked my client when did you buy this printer? 2010 was the answer.

And the moral of the story - beware old technology in a modern environment.

We went back to using the P1102w as a direct connected USB printer, ignoring the 'w' suffix.

Wow, upon cleaning all the old printers off the PC and re-installing the P1102w as a USB device we got to the point of 'ensuring the printer is powered on - and connect the USB' when  suddenly the client said the "WiFi light has just come on".

Ignored it for the moment and continued adding the device as a USB connection - OK, tested OK.

Then went back and took advantage of the WiFi light glowing and successfully connected as a WiFi printer.

Client removed the USB cable in the evening and can print from PC, Mac, iPhone and iPad.

What can I say? Just worked, out-of-the-blue, and connected to Draytek AP with WPA2 etc.
