LaserJet P1606dn
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

The printer is only a few years old and has been operating successfully for some time with the current cartridge. A paper jam occurred. To clear the jam the cartridge had to be removed. The jam was cleared successfully, and the cartridge replaced. Now, when the printer is powered on, the toner light flashes which the manual says means no cartridge present. I have removed and replaced the cartridge several times to no avail. The detector contacts on the cartridge are clean. The detector pins on the printer are correctly aligned and making contact correctly.

Do I buy a new cartridge in the hope it will work or is the problem likely to be with the detector on the printer? If the latter, is there any way I can get it fixed or do I have to buy another new printer? The previous LaserJet (different model) lasted only a few years before a minor problem killed it!

For better clarity and to assist you better, I would require more information regarding this.

  • When did this first occur?
  • Have you performed a hard reset of the printer?

You have done great troubleshooting and performed a lot of steps.

For now, I will send you a couple of links and please try all the steps in these links:

Link1:  HP LaserJet Printers - 'Install Black Cartridge' Displays: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-LaserJet-P1600-Printer-series/4110408/model/4110409/document/...

Hi DavidSMP

Many thanks for your response. I have now tried the forced reset and have again cleaned the contacts on the cartridge but to no avail. I can't see anything else wrong with the cartridge which was working fine before this problem arose. So I don't think spending money on a new HP78 cartridge is sensible as, if I have to buy a replacement printer, it will take a different cartridge and the 78 will be a waste of money.

The printer is now out of warranty. What options do I have for getting it fixed? I tried working these out on the HP support website but it was all very unclear. Any advice appreciated.

Best regards

Hi @mikehalty,

I read your super quick response and thank you for the same. It has been an absolute privilege to work with you and share this platform with you. 🙂

Please contact HP phone support to get the printer replaced or upgraded. You could also check with them if the cartridges could be returned as it is brand new. However, I am not sure if that is an option.

I will send you a private message to contact HP phone support and HP shopping with the phone numbers included. Please don't share this information publicly.

Trust me I've done all I can to assist you here by keeping your best interest in mind. 😉

You kindly sent me the US HP-support phone numbers. Unfortunately I am in the UK. The HP-UK website obstinately refuses to cough-up phone numbers for support of out-of-warranty items. Are you able to email me a UK number which would work?

Thanks for all your help

Hi DavidSMP

Thanks agin for all your help. I tried all the links and phone numbers you gave me but none of them were the right place. I did eventually find a contact by phoning the HP Shop number and selecting the option which offered technical support for purchased items. When I eventually got through to the right department the very pleasant representative explained that, since my printer is out of warranty he was not able to help. He did give me some names of possible service centres but these were all for enterprise customers, which is no use as I'm a home user.

So I must reluctantly scrap my nice printer and buy another. Seems a waste but that's the way things are.

So thank you for all you've done and I accept this is the only solution.

Best regards
