I have this same problem except with Windows 7 64-bit. My printer worked just fine until an update maybe a year ago, and now the computer will not communicate with the printer. Printer prints a test page when I push the large button. I have downloaded every driver available, but always get "printer: error". "Troubleshooting" is useless. I have tried every combination of option settings for the printer drivers.
The fix explained for Windows 10 is not something available in Windows 7. I really want to keep using this printer as it works great - or did before microsoft did something to break the driver/connection. Thanks.

In Windows 7 x64 follow me......
Add new printer -> Local printer -> Next -> change from LPT1 to DOT4_001 -> next -> find HP 1200 in HP menu list
HP 1200 is in there If not click the "Windows Update" waiting for its fishinging and go back finding again.
What i'm using is Win7 x64 too but chinese edition.
