I'm trying to get my HP LaserJet 1200 to work on my new Dell Computer (Windows 10, 64-bit). This printer worked fine on my old WIndows 10 64-bit error. Not so much on this new computer. I tried installing drivers from the CD. Ikeep getting this error about "System Setup program has encountered a severe error and will now exit. Restart your computer and try again." I tried restarting and reinstalling to no avail. I have also tried the latest HP drivers for this computer. They don't work either. Under Printers and Scanners" it says "driver unavailable". I am using USB to connect the printer. Is this HP's way of getting people to eventually buy a new printer?

1200 is not listed in the HP menu list -> click Windows Update under right side of HP menu list.
Seat and wait for its running ,and go back find 1200 again it should be there.
If it's not you can find HP 2200 pcl5/pcl6 it will be fine too.

Dot4-001 is not a printer's name but printer's port connected to PC.
Add a new printer manually and select port Dot4-001 (not automaticly found by Win 10-it won't work) then find LaserJet 1200 in HP's list menu.
We don't use English here in Taiwan and speak Chinese and I'm not good at English.
What I post next is in Chinese XP system you can compare it with your English Win 10.
Hope it helps.

OK. I'm close.
Printers & Scanners
Add printers & scanners
Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings
NEXT
Use existing port
DOT4_001

Unfortunately my LasetJet 1200 is not listed in the HP menu list. Should I select an alternate printer? Should I use "HP Universal Printing PCL6"?
Should I select "have disk" and the insert my old HP driver CD?

Hi,
first install the HP LaserJet USB (DOT4) communication driver for Windows 8 and Higher (64-bit) below:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL44939/fp-148007-1/Dot4x64.msi
Unplug the USB and remove any instance of your printer from Devices and Printers, then reboot your PC.
Next install HP UPD below by selecting Plug & Play:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL40842/ds-99374-19/upd-pcl6-x64-6.6.0.23029.exe
Now plug the USB and it should detect your printer successfully.

ShlomiL I tried that. It installs and under printers and scanners it says HP LaserJet 1200, but says "driver is unavailable" underneath it. I tried printing a document after selecting "HP Universal [printing PCL6" but nothing happens. Printer is connected.
Will try East2100's solution....
Update produced my printer alright.
I found "HP LaserJet 1200 series PCL 5"
Unfortunately I got an error installing it.
"Printer driver was not found"
UPDATE: 2200 driver seems to be working!!!!!
