Running into an issue with HP LaserJet Pro 3001dw  on Windows 11 where the device is going to sleep despite settings saying otherwise.

We have gone through all known troubleshooting steps - checking sleep/ auto-off settings, updating drivers, updating firmware, etc.  This issue has only been happening for the past 2-3 months or so, was fine before then.

The device will not wake unless the physical wi-fi button is pressed, or if the switch sends a ping to the device.  If the computer sends a ping to the device, it does not wake.

This is happening for multiple printers of the same model.  Any suggestions?

Hi  @MikeBNJ

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that multiple devices are entering a sleep/offline state and only wake when the Wi‑Fi button is pressed or when the network switch sends a ping, even though the power management settings appear to be configured correctly.

To better understand the situation, could you kindly provide a few additional details?

  • Are the affected printers connected via Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or a mix of both?
  • When the printer goes offline, is it still accessible through its Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer IP address into a web browser?
  • Are the printers using a static IP address or DHCP reservation?

In the meantime, I would recommend trying the below steps and confirm :

  1. Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer IP address into a web browser.
  2. Navigate to Power Management settings and verify:
    • Auto Off is disabled (if available).
    • Sleep Delay is set to the maximum available value for testing.
    • Deep Sleep or Energy Save options are disabled temporarily for troubleshooting.
  3. Verify that IPv4 remains enabled and confirm that the printer retains its network connection after entering sleep mode.
  4. Assign a manual/static IP address  if not already configured.
  5. From the EWS, review any available Network Services or Bonjour/mDNS settings and ensure they remain enabled.
  6. Remove and re-add one affected printer using its TCP/IP address instead of relying on WSD discovery. WSD ports can occasionally contribute to offline detection behaviour in Windows.
  7. If available, test disabling SNMP Status Enabled in the printer port settings on one workstation to determine whether the offline status changes.
    • Devices and Printers -Printer Properties -Ports -Configure Port.

1.  Using a mix of ethernet and wifi

2. When the printer goes offline, it is not accessible until woken up - unless it is pinged by the switch (any other ping does not wake)

3.  Auto off is disabled.  Adjusted every other sleep setting we could find

4. Manual IP set for all printers

5. SNMP is disabled for all printers

Hi @MikeBNJ,

Based on what you've shared, this does not appear to be a Windows driver issue, SNMP issue, IP configuration issue, or a standard sleep setting issue.

Since the printer becomes completely unreachable on the network when it enters its low-power state and only wakes when network ping is generated by the switch or when the Wi‑Fi button is pressed, the behaviour points to the printer's network interface entering a  power-saving state and not responding correctly to normal wake requests.

At this stage, I would request you to try the below step and confirm :

  1. Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  2. Navigate to Networking > Advanced Settings (wording may vary by firmware version).
  3. Disable any available Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), Green Ethernet, Deep Sleep, Power Save, or Low Power Network options.
  4. Ensure the printer is configured to use a manual IPv4 address.
  5. If connected via Ethernet, test one printer on a different switch port or network segment to determine whether the behaviour changes.

All energy related settings are off.  The printer is set to sleep after 1hr (max time allowed) but that doesn't explain why the only way to wake it is by physical button or pinging from the switch.

All printers of this model are experiencing this issue so it isn't isolated to one port or device.   All have manual IPv4s set.

Hi @MikeBNJ,

Thanks for the update, At this stage, there are no additional customer-accessible settings available that would be expected to resolve the behaviour if:

  • Auto Off is disabled
  • Sleep-related power-saving settings are disabled or set to maximum values
  • Static IP addresses are configured
  • SNMP is disabled
  • The issue occurs on multiple devices and network connections

Based on the results you've shared, this appears to be beyond standard configuration and network troubleshooting.

Since the printers have static IP addresses, power-saving features disabled, SNMP disabled, and the issue is occurring across multiple HP LaserJet Pro 3001dw devices, further investigation will require advanced diagnostics.

At this stage, I recommend contacting HP Phone Support for further assistance. The support team can review the firmware behavioUr, collect diagnostic logs, and determine the corrective action available for this model.

1) Click on this link—    https://support.hp.com/contact

2) Add or select the product, and change/select your region.

3) Enter the serial number of your device or select Let HP detect your product option.

4) Choose "other" option from the list

5) Select continue to contact option

You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.

They will guide you further.

Or, You may also visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
