Laserjet Pro MFP M177FW
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I purchased a LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw a couple days ago, and upon installation, it immediately became stuck in Initializing mode. I tried rebooting the printer and reinstalling the drivers, which are correctly installed according to my computer. It is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a surge protector, and I tried unplugging it, waiting a minute, and plugging it back in.  I tried to update the firmware but the installer thinks the printer is in error mode and won't proceed. I browsed the HP forums but was not able to troubleshoot further.

The scanner works just fine when I tell it to scan from the desktop, so the computer and the device are definitely talking to one another.

By the way, is the printer supposed to make a loud, rapid ratcheting noise when it is turned on?

Thank you!

Hi @SSI_Diver,

The printer shouldn't be making a loud noise like that. It sounds like the toners may not be seated correctly or there is still some packing material inside the printer.

Please go through the steps in this document to make sure everything setup properly. Here is the link: Setting Up the Printer Hardware for HP Color LaserJet Pro M177fw MFP Printers.

You can manually move the carousel for the toners, if it is stuck.

Open the scanner lid and the lid below that so you should see the toners.

On the left hand side of the black frame, you will see a oval hole with a white plastic piece inside it.

You will need to use something to push down on the white plastic piece, at the same time push the carousel backwards, don't touch the toner though. It has to be in the exact right position in order to be able to pull the toner out.

I included a picture with the general area, where to use the manual feature on the printer.

Hello,

Thank you for the instructions. I've taken all the toner cartridges out and unfortunatly am not able to find any packing material still remaining. However, now that they're out of the way, I can see and hear better that the ratcheting noise starts with a barely visible, white plastic gear in the right rear of the printer, and then when the toner carousel tries to move, it slips and goes nowhere but makes a horrible sound, like a gear is stripped. It's equally possible that there might be a bit of debris back there in a gear I can't see fully, but I can't find out without disassembling the product and that's not something I want to do. At this point should I submit a case for warranty work?
