Laserjet Pro MFP M477 FDN

All I wanted was to upgrade from my current 8600 Pro Plus to another higher end wireless, duplexed printer.  This is the most frustrating purchase I have ever experienced.  This is the second product I've purchased and returned in 5 days.

I returned both of them because HP's marketing department is fixated on product codes that mean nothing to the average consumer.  When you overlook making the buying experience easy by listing and describing the exact features of each different product code, ya get an unusual amount of returns.

As an example...a customer should quickly be able to tell the difference between FDN, FNW, etc. in the online material, or on the box.  Instead, the reason why your returns are so high, we have to find out the hard way, besides who has a hard wired network in their house?!!&#%$.    The Director of Marketing should have caught this.

Making a suggestion is futile in such a large organization, and mathmatically, my user experience doesnt count, and you know exactly what I mean people.   Unbelievable.

HI there,

Sorry, but I can't get your frustration, there are multiple products for multiple purposes, therefore any product is provided with a specification to show its capabilities.

As this is a commercial product, more targeted for business envoirment, there are many enterprises with no wireless capabilities due to security reasons, therefore there are such ethernet models only.

As you need both Duplex and wireless capabiities, the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477fdw meet any of your needs, it provide both wireless capabiities and auto duplex printing and scanning, see its specs below:

http://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=4AA6-0843EEE

By the way, its model name represents its main features quite simply - F = Fax, D = Duplex, N = Network, W = Wireless, therefore the M477fdw provide both fax, duplex and wireless.

Regards,

Shlomi

There's nothing wrong with HP's marketing department in this respect.  It's your responsibility as a shopper to know what you're buying, and it's not like HP makes it very hard to figure it out.

Since you're posting here, you obviously have internet access, so why weren't you able to look at ths VERY easy to understand chart that shows the differences between these models?  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04825025

You say that "a customer should quickly be able to tell the difference between FDN, FNW, etc. in the online material..."

I don't see how it could have been made any easier; you just didn't take the time to look.

There are still people in this world who are clever. as I am not I can fully go along with rehatx1.
It took me quite some time to find out the difference between fdn, fdw fnw
At first I thought there was no difference at all. I just went for the 477 - why not just make one model with all the features. won't cost more because they saved the trouble with the returns.  and everybody would praise the 477.
Good for you Shlomi that you are so clever. 3 Cheers and a hip hip hurrah to you.

but a big  thank you for : F = Fax, D = Duplex, N = Network, W = Wireless, therefore the M477fdw provide both faxduplex and wireless. That is a great help for me.

and sorry for being a bit attackerish

cheers

Well it's a good thing Ethernet printers can be converted to wireless for about $20.

Interesting.  The codes at the end of the product name have always meant logical features, however I note with these printeres there is inconsistancy.

According to the HP Canada site when I compare the M477fnw with the M477fdw the comparison page states that both are both ethernet and WiFi capable:

This is ittereated in two locations:

- Main Specifications:

Usage type

Print, copy, scan, fax, email, wireless

Print, copy, scan, fax, email, wireless

 - Connectivity and Communications:

Network ready

Standard (built-in Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi)

Standard (built-in Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi)

http://store.hp.com/CanadaStore/Merch/Compare.aspx?sel=PRN&merchCmp=CF377A%23BGJ%7CCF379A%23BGJ%7C

Under the Scanner Specifications it states both do Duplex ADF Scanning:

Duplex ADF scanning

Yes

Yes

However underprinter specification it infers that the fnw does not handle duplex printing well, even though in many places it says it does:

Duplex printing

Manual (driver support provided)

Automatic (standard)

Print speed duplex (letter)

Up to 25 ipm

Up to 25 ipm

Up to 25 ipm

Up to 25 ipm

From looking through the comparison the only differences that are listed are:

NFC touch-to-Print (fdw)

- Auto duplex printing (fdw)

- duplex copy (fdw)

- Duplex printing (fnw appears to be manual and fdw automatic)

- $120 more for fdw

Who can confirm these differences and if the fnw has WiFi?

What's the inconsistency exactly?

the fnw and fdw are both wifi capable.  That's why they both have the "w" in their designations.

Both do duplex printing in the sense that you can print on both sides of the page, but the fdw (but not the fnw) does AUTO duplex printing.  In other words, it will print on both sides of the page without your having to take the paper output and reinsert it to print the other side.

The fdw but not the fnw does double sided copying, in the sense that if you put in originals that are printed on both sides, it will print copies that are printed on both sides with no jhuman intervention.

In brief, the differences are:

Automatic duplex printing is not available on the fnw but is available on the other two.

The fdn has no wireless but the other two do.

The fdw has direct wireless printing (i.e., direct from your phone, no router required) using NFC and Wi-Fi direct and the other two don't.
