HP LaserJet M252dw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Got the 55.1 error last week. Have turned off the printer and back on, unplugged and plugged back in - no change.

Using the HP Smart app, I was able to see the printer & the various 55x errors that had occurred, but still had the error.

I couldn't find specific directions for resettting VRAM so just followed the directions I found online for other printers - turn on printer and when the energy symbol comes up, press on the lower right corner of the display, then release when permanent memory init comes up. After all that, still got the 55.1 error and now the HP Smart app sees that the printer is installed but that's it.

It appears that I will need to replace the engine control PCA, but I can't find any information on where to find that or even if it's something worth replacing. The printer is almost 4 years old but hasn't had massive usage and we really like it. Since I've historically been able to keep HP printers going for 10 years or more, I'm really hoping this will be a relatively simple repair.

Any help is appreciated.

And hence the reason that all HP documentation states "DO NOT PLUG YOUR PRINTER INTO A POWER STRIP OR SURGE PROTECTOR". This post demonstrates the importance of good clean dedicated power for your printer, even smaller home sized laserjet printers can require up to 10 amps on startup. Glad to hear your problem was solved without having to replace any parts.

Sounds to me like a bad DC Control board. Available online for $50 or so.

I have had this error with other printers, sometimes changing the board fixes it, sometimes it doesn't.

But you got to start somewhere.

Replacing the DC (engine) Controller board would be the next step.

I'm also sending you a link in a private message where you can get the Repair and Troubleshooting manual for your printer that will help you in replacing it if you so choose.

Reading through the troubleshooting manual was a huge help. Turns out that my printer was plugged into a power strip that also had a shredder plugged in. Once I removed it and plugged it directly into the wall, all was well. I had to reconfigure it since I had tried to reset VRAM but so far, it's still working fine. We'll see if there any more problems, and if so, at least now I have the manuals and know how to replace that controller if necessary.

Thanks again for your help!
