Whilst trying to install a firmware update (20130923) on my HP Color Laserjet CP1514n the printer went into a locked up state with both the red and green lights on, the 1st line of the display reading "Hewlett-Packard" and the 2nd line showing 2 right pointing chevrons and all buttons inopertive. It is not showing up as a connected device in my Devices and Printers in Control Panel. Hence I'm unable to doing anything with printer. Is is also not accessible from my laptop.

I have tried the NVRAM reset process but that doesn' work either.

I have tried reinstalling the printer driver (upd-pcl6-x64-6.4.1.22169.exe) but that didn't change anything.

I'm running Windows 10 64 bit.

Is there a way of reseting the printer to its factory settings that doesn't rely on th printer being connected to my PC?

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

If the printer is stuck on an error or a particular screen, the only way to resolve this is by performing a NVRAM reset. If you have tried it already and the issue still persists, it could be a possible hardware failure.

I Will send you a private message with the reset instruction so that you can verify the same.

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

Many thanks for responding to my post.

I have tried the NVRAM reset proceedure but it didn't work.

This problem started when I tried to do a firmware update which failed part way through. (Current firmware datecode is 20080813 and the firmware update I was trying to install is 20130923).

By powering the printer up and down whilst trying various button combinations with the cartridge draw open, paper tray out or various cartridges removed I managed to get the LCD to display this message: "***BootDIMM***" on the first line and "Ready to Download" on the second line and the red and green lights were not lit. However, it is a very hit and miss process and most times the LCD shows "Hewlett-Packard" and 2 right pointing chevrons (>>) on the line below with bot the red and green lights on. With both LCD displays none of the buttons do anything.

My printer isn't showing up in the Control Panel's 'Devices and Printer' window and because the printer is not in a ready state I cannot connect to it.

Prior to the aborted attempt to do the firmware update the printer was working fine.

Is it possilbe to do a NVRAM reset by accessing the printer's inner workings?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

@BobKP

  • We do not have an option to perform a NVRAM reset by any other means apart from the printer control panel.
  • The firmware version 20130923 is the latest one which is available for this printer.
  • Since the firmware update failed and the printer is not going to the home screen please contact our HP Support team for Service Options as it could be a possible printer failure:

1) Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true

2) Select your product type below.

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Select the appropriate option based on your preference.

6) Fill the web-form and proceed further.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

HP Support team do not support CP1514n LaserJet.

I have since changed the formatter &  DC controller boards but this can't get the buttons to work and the display still displays "Hewlett Packard" on 1st line and 2 right pointing arrows on the 2nd.

When my printer was working OK on stating it would display 2 right pointing arrows initially then after a few seconds another 2 arrows and finally a another single arrow followed by the green light coming at which point it was ready to print.

So it looks like start up is a 3 stage process and the printer is stuck at the first stage. What conditions need to be satisfied before it can move onto the second stage?

Any and all hints/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
