I bought a M148DW printer a few months ago. It has worked well except that it has never been able to print duplex. I have checked support pages and found these recommendations which I have tried: 1. the Automatic Duplexing option is enabled for the printer driver 2. I have also tried printing with the HP Smart app.
Does the duplexer need to be changed? What do you recommend to fix this problem?

i suggest you restore the printer back to Factory Settings and check if that helps
You can refer to page 132 in the User Guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06165778

@Crabby3, Welcome to HP Support Community!
Have you tried making a two-sided copy on the printer?
What happens when you use the HP Smart App to duplex print? Is there any error message?
Update the printer firmware
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates.
For more information, go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.
I recommend you delete the driver and root level and retry, follow the steps below:
1) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2) Select your HP Printer
3) Select Uninstall
4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe”
😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab
9) Look for the HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10) Select Ok
11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12) Close Devices and Printers.
Now, download and install the full-featured software from here.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I would suggest you try the Windows built-in drivers. Follow the steps below:
• Go to Control Panel - Devices and Printers - Click on "Add printer" and follow the on-screen instructions.
• When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.
• Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.
Refer to this document HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver for help.
Keep me posted.

@KrazyToad:
I executed all you requested, but it still does not print duplex.
Here are a few problems I encountered - I don't think they are relevant, but am sending them just in case:
- "9) Look for the HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom "
In step 9 I was unable to remove the driver because it said it was in use; it was not actually being used as far as I could see, so I looked up a solution and found it at https://appuals.com/fix-cant-remove-printer-on-windows-10/ . I used regedit as described in “Method 2”
- "Restart the computer and run the SFC scan"
SFC scan failed because of some "false" MS Windows Defender issues. I found the solution at https://www.tenforums.com/performance-maintenance/137644-sfc-scannow-defender-corruption.html
and then re-ran SFC scan and there were no errors.

This seems to be an issue with Windows. I suggest you perform a Reset and then download the full feature software again
You can follow the instructions in this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04742289 to help you with the Reset
