Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a LaserJet MFP 477fnw that all over sudden produces red dots on the left hand side of the paper about 1 inch apart.

I have updated the drivers, firmware and anything else I could think of. I also have played with different paper types and I have cleaned the printer.

There is no difference if I print in color or B&W, the dots are there. However, if I print a blank page, there are no dots, if I print a printer report, there are no dots.

I have tried different software to print, I have used pdfs.

The only thing I found is that if I print an excel file in all black - no dots. As soon as I add color to one of the cells, the dots are there.

Any idea what might cause this?

Based on the spacing likely you have either a bad magenta cartridge or something stuck to the drum of the magenta cartridge or the mag roller in the cartridge.  Pull the toner out and look at the blue/green drum to see if you can find contamination. Do not touch the drum with bare skin as the oils can lead to more problems. If you find something stuck you can try to gently remove using a lint free cloth. Do not scrub aggressively as you can scratch the drum.
