HP 476

I have to say I just found the answer to a problem that has been frustrating me for some time now.

I have an HP476 and the specifications say it will scan at a max. of 1200 dpi

I've never been able to get it to work.  Why?

Apparently because the AIO limits scanning resolution to 300 dpi if you are using the sheet-feeder.

I do volume scanning of tax paperwork, and it really NEEDs to be at 600 dpi to get the job done.

Until tonight when I just needed to scan a single form, put it on the glass and the higher resolutions were available...

it never occurred to me that this was a built-in limitation of the printer, apparently by design.

I don't think I would have designed it that way, but if had done it that way for some reason...

I'd have made that limitation VERY clear in the manual ...

Hope this helps a few people...

Jim

It comes down to how accurate a low end scanner can feed paper through the ADF. Due to mechanical limitations on feeding perfectly straight they have to limit DPI. Even on high end models the manuals usually state that if  you require High Def scanning to scan from the glass.

Yup... it makes sense trooper, but  I'd like to see how bad it looked  😉

My bleep really is that the limitation should be made clear in the manual...

I've not had any piece of software (out of 5 or 6),

including 3 different products from HP

old scan interface, new scan interface, and the Microsoft Store  "HP Scan and Capture" app.

that gave me a coherent warning message "Scan from flatbed for resolutions higher than 300..."

The 3rd party stuff (using either interface WIA / TWAIN* ) usually just throws and incomprehesnable error message

ABBYY FineReader just says  "The Parameter is incorrect".

Sorry, not going off on YOU of course ... 😂

Just trying to warn of what I consider to be unclear product limitations.

Clearly stated on the product data sheets

Good to see, I did not get that data sheet when I bought my printer.

I don't believe that piece of data is mentioned in the user manual that I received with my unit: CF385-90907

I just looked again ... can't find mention of it. All it says (that I can find) is:

Color, grayscale, and black and white define the number of colors possible. You can adjust the scanner
hardware resolution to up to 1200 ppi. The resolution and color guidelines table lists simple tips that you can follow to meet your scanning needs.

One more sentence in that paragraph would have made a lot of difference at least for me.

The objective of my post was to highlight the distinction, and possibly save others some frustration that's all.
