Ensure that the driver knows that a duplex unit is present on the printer (assuming that one is):

  • For the printer instance in question, bring up the Printer properties dialogue.
  • Select the Device settings tab.
  • Ensure that the duplex unit is set to Installed rather than Not installed.

You'll probably need to be logged in with administrator credentials in order to change the device settings.

If the device does not have a hardware duplex unit, then you can't do automatic duplexing, but you may be able to do manual duplexing (print odd sides, reinsert paper, print even sides) if the printer driver and source document application support this.

I'm having the same problem that my HP 3390/3392 won't print double sided like it did before.  When I go into the printer properties and settings, there's no place where you can check the duplex unit is installed.  Windows 10 installed the HP LaserJet 3390/3392 PCL6 Class Driver for this printer.  Is this the wrong driver or how do I get to correct screen?

My Windows 10 Professional 64-bit system has several built-in drivers for LaserJet 3390/3392 printers:

You may have to click the Windows Update button in this Add Printer dialogue, then wait (perhaps for several minutes) whilst additional drivers are downloaded, before the list is repopulated.

Of course, I have no idea if these drivers will work successfully, or if they will provide all of the features that you may want.

I suspect that the 'Class' drivers include only 'lowest common denominator" features, hence it would seem sensible to select a different driver.

Thanks for the suggestion but Windows only found one printer (the same one) and there was no button in the dialog box to check for Windows Update.  But, I went to HP's website and downloaded a driver called HP Universal Printing PCL 6 and installed it and now duplex printing works. 🙂  Appreciate your help.
