Greetings,
I've looked at several threads and I've tried what they all suggest but none of it works.
Model number is J7949E
I need to totally wipe this unit clean back to factory settings. I've read (and even performed) the following, suggested by user: GURMEETS
*****************************************************************************************************
1) please performe Perform cold reset detail are mention below
A)Turn the MFP off and then on.
B) When the memory count appears on the control-panel display, press and hold 6 until all three
LEDs flash once and then stay on. This might take up to 20 seconds.
C)Press 3 four times until COLD RESET appears on the control-panel display.
D)Press 6 one time. The MFP continues its initialization sequence.
2) Disconnect harddisk cable connections
3) Assign different ip through printer control
Administration < Initial Setup < Networking And I/O < Embedded Jetdirect < TCP/IP < IPV4 SETTINGS < Config Method- Manual Save
< Manual Settings < Enter new Ip - Save
4) Acess printer EWS page through new IP assigned as previously and unblock Administration
5) Connect the harddisk
*****************************************************************************************
Unfortunately, it did not work. I seen the COLD RESET appear (during the required step) and I pressed 6 after that... it rebooted and initialized, I unplugged the cable connecting the hard drive. I turned the machine back on... got the standard "hard drive not detected..." message, but nothing was changed. My fax settings were the same, and I am still locked out of the service menu.
I don't even see a menu for administrators, only 'service'. If i use a browser, I dont see an admin link either... but I do see a login link in the upper right... and when I click on that, I am prompted for user name/password. I don't know what the default should be/is. I do know that the settings were not reset because it is still same IP as before...
Please help.. I have 4 other machines I need to reset. 😞
(former IT techs were let go years ago... and we have a service account for these MFP's... but our stupid help desk recent changed the password for the service account... so now NOBODY can scan a file to a shared network folder.. and these people in this factory are stubborn (in a nice way) and that's the way they've been doing it for years.

You have not performed the NVRAM reset which will reset all settings back to factory default, change the ip address and wipe other paramaters. The only cavet is if the unit was added to the network using the MAC address and the network administrator used the MAC address to assign the password to the unit then it may not be possible to unlock the printers web interface until that MAC address is removed as the method of seeing the printer. Instructions for the NVRAM reset are contained below. I would disconnect the network cable, perform the NVRAM reset and then put the network cable back in and wait a couple of minutes for the printer to obtain a new ip address and then type that ip address into your web browser to access the web browser of the printer and all menus should now be available.
NVRAM initialization
NOTE If an HP LaserJet analog fax accessory 300 is installed, performing an NVRAM
initialization can cause the MFP to violate local telephone regulations. Reset the language and
country/region after performing NVRAM initialization. For more information, see the
HP LaserJet Analog Fax Accessory 300 Service Manual.
Before performing an NVRAM initialization, print a menu map and a configuration page. See
Information pages. Use the information on these pages to reset any customer-specific settings.
CAUTION All HP Jetdirect settings are also reset. Be sure to print a configuration page
before performing a cold reset. Make note of the IP address that is listed on the Jetdirect
configuration page. You will need to restore the IP address after performing a cold reset. See
Configuring and verifying an IP address.
Performing an NVRAM initialization resets the following settings and information:
■ All menu settings are reset to factory default values, including the fax header and company name.
■ All faxes in memory are erased.
■ All speed-dials, group-dials, and phonebook entries are erased.
■ All localization settings, including language and country/region, are reset.
After performing an NVRAM initialization, reconfigure any computers that print to this MFP so that
the computers can recognize the MFP.
To perform an NVRAM initialization
1 Turn the MFP off and then on.
2 When the memory count appears on the control-panel display, press and hold 9 until all three
LEDs flash once and then stay on. This might take up to 20 seconds.
3 Press 3 one time, and then press START.
4 Press 3 two times until NVRAM INIT appears on the control-panel display.
5 Press 6 one time, and wait while the MFP completes its initialization sequence.

Thanks,
I did get it to work yesterday. I followed some other persons answer first, because he had "HP EXPERT" for his profile pic... which I think he just copied something off the internet. There is a lot of mis-information about doing that reset.
one thing I was nervous about was re-mapping all the scan-to network folders. Luckily for me, (I didn't know this) it appears they are stored on the hard drive?
So, after the reset (pressing "9", not 6 like some people claim to start the process), I disconnected the hard drive. I went back upstairs to my laptop, configured the settings, paper handling information, fax information, etc... then I went down stairs and reconnected the hard drive when I turned the machine back on, I logged in to start the folder mapping and they were already there!! Only thing I had to do was update the user password (that was the whole issue, our UN-helpful helpdesk changed the password on our service account that we use for all our printers... which prohibited any scanning to network folders (since it is set up on a permissions basis).
I just hope our other machines (I have about 4 or 5 to go) all have the folder paths on the hard drive too!
