Hi @ErinEoin

Welcome to the HP Support Community! Thanks for posting your query!

We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing that detail. I’d like to gather a bit more information so we can narrow down what’s happening before moving into any steps. This will help us isolate whether the issue is with the printer hardware, the cartridge, or the software side.

Could you let me know:

  • The exact printer model you’re using (for example, HP LaserJet, OfficeJet, Smart Tank, etc.).
  • Whether this is a single-color issue (only cyan missing) or if other colors are affected too.
  • If you recently replaced or refilled the cyan cartridge/tank, and whether it’s an original HP cartridge or another type.
  • Whether the printer is showing any error messages or warnings on its panel or in the HP app.
  • If you’ve tried printing both documents and test pages, and whether cyan is missing in all cases.

Once I have these details, we’ll be able to pinpoint the cause more effectively and then move into the right troubleshooting path.

Hi Hawks_Eye, thank you for your message.  The printer is a HP Envy 5000 All in One Printer.  The Cyan stopped working on the old toner Cartridge.  I ordered a new Cartridge from the instant ink people and changed the toner.  The problem is exactly the same.  It is only the Cyan that is missing.  There are not any error messages on the printer and I have run all the maintenance procedures, such as cleaning the print heads many times.  Many thanks for your help.  Ian

Hi @ErinEoin

Thanks for all the details.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to replace the cartridge and still see no cyan output, especially after running the cleaning cycles multiple times.

You’ve already done a thorough round of checks, so let’s focus on the areas that can still make a difference.

Steps to try next:

  • Run a Print Quality Diagnostic Page from the printer’s control panel. This will show whether cyan is completely absent or printing faintly.

  • Perform a Printhead Alignment from the printer’s maintenance menu. Sometimes alignment helps restore a missing color channel.

  • Remove the cartridges and gently clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and inside the carriage with a lint‑free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water. Allow them to dry fully before reinserting.

  • Check that the vent tab on the cyan cartridge has been fully removed. If the vent is blocked, ink cannot flow.

  • Make sure the printer firmware is current. You can update it through the HP App on your computer or mobile device. Here is the support page: Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support

  • If cyan is still missing after these steps, run the Printhead Cleaning again, but select the “Deep Cleaning” option if available.

Why this matters:

Since you’ve already tried a new cartridge, the issue is more likely related to ink flow or the printhead itself rather than the cartridge. Cleaning contacts, checking vents, and ensuring firmware alignment are the most effective ways to restore a single missing color.

If cyan continues to be absent even after deep cleaning and alignment, it points to a printhead blockage or failure. At that stage, replacement of the printhead would be the next step.
