Hi @maguire422,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 printer is only setting up as a fax machine and will not install properly as a standard printer, there are several steps you can take to resolve the issue:

Check Connections:

  • Ensure that all cables are securely connected. This includes power cords, USB cables, or Ethernet cables if you are not using a wireless setup.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer by pressing the power button.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait about 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.

Update Printer Firmware and Drivers:

  • Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
  • Enter your printer model and follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware and drivers.

Re-run Printer Setup:

Verify Printer Status:

  • On your computer, access the “Devices and Printers” in the Control Panel.
  • Ensure that your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 printer is set as the default printer and not the OfficeJet Pro 8740 Fax.

Remove and Reinstall Printer Software:

  • Uninstall any existing HP printer software from your computer.
  • Restart your computer and then reinstall the printer software using the download from the HP website.

Check Network Connection:

  • If connecting via Wi-Fi, ensure your printer and computer are on the same network. Use the printer’s control panel to toggle Wi-Fi settings and re-enter your network details if needed.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
